HBO boss confirms when Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon will end

HBO has revealed the airdate for the final episode of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones spin-off, following comments from creator George R.R. Martin about a difficult working relationship with the show’s producers.

Premiering in 2022, House of the Dragon tells the story of the Targaryen family – the same family featured in the popular fantasy series Game of Thrones. The show is based on George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire and Blood.

Following the end of Game of Thrones in 2019, House of the Dragon was the first spin-off series created. It was later followed by A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which tells the story of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg.

According to Casey Bloys, the head of content for HBO and HBO Max, House of the Dragon will conclude after its fourth season, despite the show’s popularity.

Speaking with Deadline, HBO’s Bloys confirmed that the upcoming fourth season of the show is intended to be the last. He explained that the series was always planned to cover the complete history of the Targaryen family, mirroring the events as they unfold in the source material. This means the story will conclude with the established fate of the Targaryens.

When asked if the fourth and final season would be longer than previous seasons, he explained that Ryan Condal is currently finishing up post-production on season three while also planning out season four with the writers. He doesn’t yet know how many episodes season four will have.

This follows Martin’s comments to The Hollywood Reporter where he described his working relationship with Condal as “terrible” and said it started to fall apart after they finished the first season of the show.

In an interview with Deadline, Bloys acknowledged the ongoing conflict, stating he’d rather keep disagreements private, like most families. However, he recognized that wasn’t the current situation.

George R.R. Martin recommended Ryan as the ideal person to develop House of the Dragon. Ryan has proven to be a fantastic showrunner – a truly collaborative and creative partner. We fully support his vision for the show, and that’s why we moved forward with his ideas.

He praised Martin, calling him a key creative force behind the show and a valuable collaborator on House of the Dragon.

Bloys explained that it’s unrealistic to expect him to always see eye-to-eye with the people making shows. Creative differences are normal when artists collaborate, and disagreements are simply part of the process.

You can find all eight seasons of Game of Thrones on DVD and Blu-ray. The prequel series, House of the Dragon, is available on HBO and Max in the United States, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the United Kingdom.
