Hawkeye Producer Officially Seals Season 2’s Fate 5 Years Later

Hawkeye, usually a precise marksman, has recently faced some setbacks. Jeremy Renner, who plays Clint Barton, is struggling in his dealings with Disney and Marvel Studios, and the situation has become even more difficult with the latest news regarding his planned Disney+ series.

After almost five years since its first season premiered, the future of the Disney+ and Marvel series Hawkeye is now clear – and it’s not getting another season. While attention has shifted to the new series Wonder Man, its showrunner, Andrew Guest, confirmed that there are no plans for a continuation of Hawkeye when asked about it.

We did brainstorm ideas for a second season of Hawkeye at one point,” explained Guest. “However, it just didn’t align with Marvel’s overall plans and scheduling. I really enjoyed working on the show, and I think Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld have great chemistry – I’d love to see them reprise their roles if possible.

Look, the show had a pretty rocky start – there was a moment where Jeremy Renner actually called Marvel’s initial offer “an insult,” which he later walked back, saying he’d always work with them. But listening to the people involved talk now, it really feels like the window for this project might be closing. It’s like they’re subtly signaling this might not happen, and honestly, it sounds like a sad goodbye.

Is Marvel Done With Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye?

What made the Hawkeye series special was its focus on Clint Barton’s inner life and how it allowed him to take Kate Bishop, played by Hailee Steinfeld, under his wing. Their dynamic was fantastic, and it would be disappointing if that story wasn’t continued, perhaps in future Marvel phases like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The plan was always to continue the story of Hawkeye for a second season, even incorporating a Christmas setting because everyone involved loves that New York world. They feel there’s no place more beautiful than New York City during the holidays, and things feel a bit dull after Christmas is over.

Things aren’t looking great for Hawkeye, honestly. Beyond everything else, it’s still up in the air whether Jeremy Renner will ever play the character again. I’m starting to wonder if he might end up following Scarlett Johansson’s lead and jump over to DC Studios to find another superhero role, like his buddy Black Widow did. It’s a real question mark right now.

Kate Bishop is set to star in the animated horror film Marvel Zombies in 2025. Her continued presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could also create opportunities for Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, to reappear in future projects.

Season 1 of Hawkeye is currently streaming on Disney+.
