Has Hollywood turned their back on Sydney Sweeney? Star’s cameo in The Devil Wears Prada 2 is axed after American Eagle controversy and ‘infancy roleplay’ on Euphoria

Sydney Sweeney has in recent years risen to become one of Hollywood’s most successful young stars.

I’ve been following Jennifer Coolidge for ages, and she’s always been amazing in everything – seriously, The White Lotus and The Handmaid’s Tale were just the beginning! But when I heard she was joining Euphoria? Oh my gosh, I knew she was about to become a total icon, and she absolutely did! It was like, everything she’d been building up to, and it completely blew up her career in the best way possible.

This success quickly launched her film career, with popular movies like the romantic comedy Anyone But You and the thrilling blockbuster The Housemaid.

Despite her achievements, there’s been some drama, and it’s now been revealed that Sydney’s part in the upcoming film The Devil Wears Prada 2 has been removed.

The actress appeared as herself in a short, three-minute scene where she received a makeover from Emily Blunt’s character, Emily Charlton.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Sydney’s character was originally planned to appear early in the film, but the scene was cut because it didn’t fit well with the overall story.

It’s the latest blow for the star following a string of headline-grabbing controversies.

Sydney Sweeney starred in an American Eagle ad campaign featuring the slogan ‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,’ which sparked controversy. Some critics argued the ad promoted eugenics and aligned with far-right ideologies.

In a recent advertisement, Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in ‘Anyone But You,’ playfully stated that her genes are blue while buttoning up a pair of blue jeans. She was referencing how traits like hair color, personality, and eye color are inherited from parents, making a humorous connection to the color of her denim.

A video showed the celebrity in a denim jumpsuit with a low-cut top, as the camera focused on her chest.

She explained that her body type was largely due to her genetics, then playfully reminded the camera operator to focus on her face, saying, ‘Hey, eyes up here.’

The campaign sparked controversy online, with some users criticizing it as resembling ‘Nazi propaganda,’ while others dismissed the criticism as excessive and unreasonable.

Despite the negative reaction, the brand’s earnings actually increased, reaching $1.28 billion since June, according to figures released on Wednesday.

After the market closed, investors reacted positively to the news, driving the clothing store’s stock price up by 25%. However, the stock remains 18% lower than it was at the beginning of the year.

According to experts who spoke with the Daily Mail, the controversial advertisement was deliberately designed to be shocking and get people talking.

As a lifestyle and PR expert, I’ve been following the Sydney Sweeney conversation closely, and honestly, I don’t see what’s happening as a mistake. It’s more complex than that, and framing it as a ‘misstep’ doesn’t quite capture the nuances of the situation, according to my colleague Alexandria Hurley, a publicist based in Las Vegas.

Sydney has faced some public criticism before, like with her sketch on Saturday Night Live and her recent product collaboration with Dr. Squatch. But instead of apologizing or backing down, she’s consistently doubled down on her choices. This isn’t accidental; it’s a deliberate tactic.

Okay, so I’m completely obsessed with Sydney Sweeney, and honestly, everyone is talking about Euphoria right now! It’s kinda crazy because the new season is getting a lot of attention – and some drama – because her character, Cassie, is going down a really unexpected path. She’s… exploring content creation, let’s say, on OnlyFans. It’s bold, and honestly, I’m living for it, but it’s definitely got people talking!

The third season of the show premiered this month, but fans have voiced concerns about how its female characters are overly sexualized.

A trailer for the entire season depicts Cassie dressed as a baby in a compromising sexual position.

On Tuesday’s Megyn Kelly Show, Megyn Kelly discussed a trailer with the hosts of the Ruthless podcast, stating that it seemed to ‘sexualize infancy’.

Kelly stated that the image—showing actress Sydney Sweeney lying on a couch in a baby outfit—was overtly sexualizing infancy. She shared this opinion with her co-hosts while displaying the picture.

She strongly criticized fans who justified the content as a typical interest, and even called the show’s creator, Sam Levinson, ‘sick.’

Kelly was surprised by the actress’s willingness to do the sex scene, and pointed to an earlier scene in the first episode as an example – a scene where the actress was dressed as a dog and barked for her on-screen boyfriend, Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi.

The latest episode depicted Cassie participating in adult content that focused on a baby-themed fetish, including full nudity.

The talk show host focused most of their questions on Levinson. Kelly then mentioned reports that some of the actresses on Euphoria felt uneasy with the show’s level of nudity.

She claimed Levinson intentionally added scenes with nudity, forcing the actresses to remove their clothing.

Kelly suggested the actresses might tolerate the frequent nudity in hopes of becoming famous, but she also acknowledged reports that some of them felt uneasy about it.

She then slammed Levinson as ‘at a minimum a jerk, and more than likely – a problem.’

Kelly believes the problematic scenes demonstrate a lack of judgment in Hollywood, suggesting they’ve gone too far. She predicts that most viewers, even those who like the actress, will be shocked by the imagery of her dressed as a baby.

Levinson has explained his creative choices for the show, stating the intimate scenes with Sweeney were meant to create a stronger connection between the viewers and the characters.

He mentioned that Cassie was playfully acting like a dog, complete with mimicking dog ears and a nose. He found it amusing, but what really made the moment special was that her housekeeper was the one recording it.

We always aimed to add another level of unexpected humor, something that would prevent the story from becoming completely lost in the character’s imagination. The joke is to surprise the audience, to remind them they’re watching a performance.

We aimed to immerse the viewer in her perspective, letting them experience what she’s presenting, while also stepping back to reveal the overall sadness of the situation.

In a 2022 interview with The Independent, Sydney stated she never felt pressured to perform nude scenes, and that Levinson was open to her input.

There were times when the script called for Cassie to be without a shirt, but I’d tell Sam, “I don’t think that’s needed.” He’d always agree, saying, “Okay, we can skip that.”

Before it even aired, the third season received harsh early reviews, being called both a chaotic mess and surprisingly boring.

Currently, the season has a 46% ‘Rotten’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a significant drop from the 80% and 78% ‘Fresh’ ratings of the first two seasons.
