Harry Potter Fans Believe HBO Cast Adolescence Star Owen Cooper as Tom Riddle

The new HBO series is set to premiere on Christmas, and a first look trailer was released last week. However, the show still needs to cast a major character.

Most of the cast for the first season has been set, and fans are buzzing about the latest potential addition: Tom Riddle. Many Harry Potter enthusiasts believe that Owen Cooper, the Emmy-winning star of Adolescence, has been cast as the young Voldemort. The speculation began when a large number of the confirmed cast members started following Cooper on social media, which would be a significant casting choice for the series.

Dominic McLaughlin’s official Instagram account, @official_dominicmclaughlin, is following 50 people, and many of them are his fellow actors from the Harry Potter films. He recently started following Owen Cooper, who reciprocated by following him back.

Lox Pratt, the actor playing Draco Malfoy, is also a follower of Cooper, though Cooper doesn’t follow him back. Several other cast members – Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger), Leo Earley (Seamus Finnigan), Alessia Leoni (Parvati Patil), Finn Stephens (Vincent Crabbe), and Asha Soetan (Angelina Johnson) – also follow Cooper.

Young Tom Riddle Makes His Debut in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

I just got a peek at the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone series on HBO Max, and it looks promising! However, don’t get too excited just yet – filming is still underway. They’re currently planning to wrap up production in May, with a hopeful release date set for Christmas. It’s a long wait, but the first glimpse is definitely getting me hyped!

Notably, Voldemort is one of the major characters who hasn’t been revealed yet. As fans will recall from the first three books, Voldemort was weakened after his failed attempt to kill Harry Potter and existed as a parasite attached to the back of Professor Quirrell’s head.

HBO hasn’t revealed who will play Voldemort in the upcoming series. While there’s a lot of guessing online, many fans are hoping Cillian Murphy will get the part, especially after his recent Oscar win.

The show will significantly feature a young Tom Riddle, marking a big shift in the story. Filming locations suggest we’ll see Voldemort’s attack on the Potters on Halloween, and glimpses of him on the back of Quirrell’s head confirm he’ll be a key part of Season 1. However, the younger version of Voldemort hasn’t appeared on screen yet.

Owen Cooper Could Join Harry Potter Season 2

While it doesn’t seem probable that a young Tom Riddle will appear in the first season, the show’s timeline suggests it’s possible. They’re currently writing the script and plan to begin filming later this year, which aligns with the period Riddle would have been active.

In the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Christian Coulson portrayed the young Tom Riddle, despite being 23 years old while playing a 16-year-old. Owen Cooper is currently 16, making him a suitable choice to play the character in the upcoming second season.

HBO hasn’t officially announced any casting decisions yet, but many believe he would be a great fit for the part, especially after his recent performance.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on HBO on Dec. 25.
