The BBC has announced the cast for the third season of Jimmy McGovern’s award-winning series Time, and a well-known actor from Netflix thrillers will be joining the show as an inmate.
Jo Joyner, who many viewers will recognize from the Netflix series Stay Close, is joining the cast. She will play a character called Nicola in the new season, which is three episodes long and is now being filmed in Belfast.
Joining David Tennant (known from Doctor Who) and Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley), the third season of the show will move to a Young Offenders Institution. Finneran will reprise her role as prison chaplain Marie-Louise, but the new season will feature a completely different location and storyline.
The new season is shaping up to be intense and heartbreaking. It centers on Marie-Louise, who arrives at the YOI feeling lost and quickly finds herself at odds with Bailey, a long-serving officer facing personal struggles. After a terrible event occurs within the facility, Bailey must choose between revealing a past mistake and keeping it hidden, even if it destroys him.
Joining the cast alongside Joyner, Tennant, and Finneran are talented actors Vinette Robinson (known for Boiling Point), Warren Brown (The Responder), and Daniel Ryan (The Bay), who will play Custodial Manager Jennings.

This season will heavily feature the stories of teenagers involved in the events. Louis McCartney, known for his role in Stranger Things: The First Shadow, stars as James, a young man grappling with the aftermath of a violent act and trying to confront his parents. Newcomer Ollie McNulty plays Peter, who is forced to choose between telling the truth and remaining loyal to his family.
Jimmy McGovern, the creator of the series, expressed his delight with the cast, saying it was a “wonderful” group of actors.
Samuel Bailey, who co-wrote the series, believes it will be as powerful and emotionally affecting as the first two seasons of Time. He’s especially looking forward to viewers meeting the actors playing the young offenders, praising their talent and skill.
The show’s first two seasons, featuring acclaimed actors Sean Bean, Stephen Graham, and Jodie Whittaker, were a critical and award-winning success, so anticipation is very high for the new season.
