Happy Death Day 3 Update Revealed by Jessica Rothe

Even though a new Happy Death Day movie has been discussed for years, it’s still uncertain if and when it will happen. The good news is that Jessica Rothe, the lead actress, is confirmed to return if the film moves forward.

During an interview at South by Southwest (SXSW), Jessica Rothe discussed the future of the Happy Death Day films. She confirmed that director Chris Landon has a wild idea for Happy Death Day 3 and is interested in combining it with his other successful horror movie, Freaky. The main challenge right now is simply getting the movie greenlit and made, but Rothe is eager to reprise her role as Tree whenever the time comes, even if it’s years down the line.

Happy Death Day Part 3 Would Be Even More Insane

According to actress Christina Roth, director and writer Chris Landon has a complete plan for a third movie in the series. She described his vision as ‘bonkers’ and ‘insane,’ but the perfect ending to the trilogy. Roth joked that Landon’s films could even create their own shared universe, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which she playfully dubbed the ‘Chris Landon Universe,’ and hinted at potential crossovers between his movies.

She explained that filmmaking is a long and complicated process with many challenges, but she’s eager to reprise her role, just like Jamie Lee Curtis did in Halloween. She’s confident she could still play the character, even at 75, and is excited for the project to come together when the timing is right.

Jessica Rothe Wants to Return as Tree

The 2017 film Happy Death Day features Jessica Rothe as Tree Gelbman, a college student who is murdered on her birthday. She then becomes trapped in a time loop, reliving the day over and over again each time she dies. To break the cycle, Tree needs to uncover the identity of her killer and stop them. The film’s clever premise proved popular with audiences, earning over $125 million globally on a budget of under $5 million.

Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard returned for the 2019 follow-up film, Happy Death Day 2U. Picking up right after the first movie’s ending, Tree unexpectedly finds herself in a confusing situation with different, overlapping timelines. This time, she needs to understand why this new time loop is happening if she wants to get back to her original life. While it didn’t make quite as much money as the first Happy Death Day, the sequel was still a hit, earning over $62 million on a $9 million budget.

Happy Death Day is currently streaming on HBO Max.
