Filmmaker Curry Barker is experiencing a major breakthrough with his first movie released in theaters. The film is both critically acclaimed and a box office hit, proving to be a significant success for his career.
Focus Features released the horror film Obsession on May 15th. It’s received overwhelmingly positive reviews, currently boasting a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – making it one of the year’s best-received horror movies. Audiences agree, giving it a 95% score as well. The film has been a hit with viewers, and strong word-of-mouth seems to be driving its success at the box office.
Obsession Gets an Ultra Rare Rise in Its Second Weekend
After just two weekends in cinemas, the film Obsession is expected to reach around $80 million in ticket sales worldwide – more than 100 times its $750,000 production cost. This weekend, it came in second place at the domestic box office, earning $22.4 million – a 30% increase from its opening weekend. It was only beaten by the new Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which opened with $81.9 million. It’s important to remember that The Mandalorian and Grogu is part of the hugely popular Star Wars franchise.
The horror film Obsession had an unusually strong second weekend in theaters, earning $22.4 million – a 30% increase from its opening weekend. Producer Jason Blum shared this news on X (formerly Twitter), noting that this level of growth is rare for horror movies. He also expressed gratitude to the film’s distributors, Focus Features, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, and Divide/Conquer, for their early support.
The film Obsession offers a contemporary take on the saying, “Be careful what you wish for.” It centers on Bear, played by Michael Johnston (known from Teen Wolf), who acquires a mysterious toy capable of making his deepest desire come true. He wishes for his longtime friend, Nikki, to fall in love with him, but this leads to shocking, frightening, and extremely violent results.
Curry Barker Has Other Major Projects in the Works
Before becoming a film director, Curry Barker gained attention for his comedic sketches on YouTube, created with Cooper Tomlinson. He then wrote and directed the found footage horror film Milk & Serial with Tomlinson, filming it on a remarkably small budget of only $800. When he couldn’t secure traditional distribution for the movie, Barker made the bold decision to release it for free on YouTube, where it received overwhelmingly positive feedback from viewers.
Clive Barker’s initial work gained a lot of attention, so it’s not surprising he’s becoming a major name in horror. He’s recently been hired by A24 to write and direct a new project. Plus, he’s also directing an upcoming supernatural horror film called Anything but Ghosts, featuring Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard.
Obsession is now playing in movie theaters.
