‘Grey’s Anatomy’ writer fesses up, admits she ‘lied so much’ in faking cancer fight
As a long-time fan of Grey’s Anatomy and a follower of behind-the-scenes dramas, I’ve always been intrigued by the fascinating lives and experiences that shape our beloved shows. However, the story of Elisabeth Finch is one that leaves me both captivated and saddened.
Only Elisabeth “can speak to her personal story.”
In 2022, representatives from the “Grey’s Anatomy” production company, Shondaland, confirmed this to The Times, following ABC’s suspension of writer Elisabeth Finch.
Finch, who has worked extensively in TV writing for a long time, is reportedly found to have made up certain aspects of her personal and health history, such as claiming to have fought a rare type of bone cancer. These untruths served as the basis for some episodes on “Grey’s” and were crucial points in articles she wrote for well-known publications.
But after two years and a new docuseries about the controversy, Finch is finally speaking her personal truth.
Finch admitted on Instagram yesterday that he has deceived everyone and lied about numerous things, causing genuine distress among many. He acknowledges that ‘I’m sorry’ may seem insignificant compared to his actions, but it is the most sincere sentiment he can express.
Finch, her questionable medical history and her time on “Grey’s Anatomy” are at the center of “Anatomy of Lies,” a new three-part docuseries from Peacock. “Anatomy of Lies” is based on Vanity Fair’s “Scene Stealer” report in May 2022 that chronicled Finch’s ruse and how she climbed the ranks behind the scenes in the writers room. She also served on the producing team during her “Grey’s Anatomy” tenure, which lasted from 2014 to 2022.
Actress Finch, known for shows like “The Vampire Diaries” and “True Blood,” frequently shared stories about her health struggles and difficult situations in her writing. These events encompassed being diagnosed with a rare type of bone cancer, undergoing an abortion during chemotherapy treatment, and receiving an incorrect diagnosis from a physician. Prior to Vanity Fair’s report, The Ankler had already revealed that Disney, the parent company of ABC, was conducting an investigation into Finch and aspects of her life narrative.
In December 2022, Finch admitted everything to The Ankler, leading to her being temporarily suspended from work while they conducted an inquiry.
“What I did was wrong,” she said. “Not okay. F— up. All the words.”
In her Tuesday letter, Finch expressed similar feelings, acknowledging she had fallen into the trap of deceit which she admitted left friends, family, and colleagues feeling shocked and let down. Finch explained that she realizes some people might find it difficult to trust her now, but also shared that she has been seeking mental health support.
Finch admitted that his deep affection is for his estranged wife, Jennifer Beyer, and her five children. Beyer played a significant role in the Vanity Fair report and is heavily featured in “Anatomy of Lies.” Finch expressed regret over agreeing to Jennifer’s proposal before being truthful with her, stating it as one of the biggest mistakes in his life, alongside initially lying about having cancer.
She added: “To be clear, there’s no justification or excuse for my deceit. My lies will never be acceptable, and they have left an indelible mark – fear, pain, anger, tears, wasted time. However, nothing is more important to me than acknowledging and taking responsibility for my actions.
In her final remarks, Finch expressed her determination to rectify any mistakes, understanding that the process might require patience: “I’ll put in the effort and be patient as much as needed.
As per her IMDb profile, Finch hasn’t taken on any film projects in Hollywood following the incident two years back. Nevertheless, with “Anatomy of Lies,” she makes a comeback to television, but this time not as an actor.
