Gregory Rodrigues is the UFC 304 fighter to watch

As a devoted fan of mixed martial arts, I have been eagerly anticipating UFC 304, which is set to take place on July 27 at the Co-op Live Center in Manchester, England. The main attractions of the evening will undoubtedly be the two British champions, Leon Edwards and Tom Aspinall. However, there’s one fighter on the card that I believe deserves more recognition, and that is Gregory Rodrigues.

At UFC 304 on July 27, Co-op Live Center in Manchester, England will host the event. Two renowned British champions, Leon Edwards and Tom Aspinall, are set to headline the show. Paddy Pimblett, a rising UK star at lightweight, is generating buzz before the fight lineup. However, there’s another fighter who deserves more recognition – Gregory Rodrigues, a Brazilian middleweight making his debut on short notice against Christian Leroy Duncan, an emerging British prospect.

Rodrigues is predominantly a tall and robust striker, standing at six feet three inches, with a strong propensity to advance towards the opponent and take shots. He is known for his determination and readiness to finish off opponents. His resilience is evident as he has only been knocked out by a select few powerful opponents like Brunno Ferreira and Jordan Williams. Rodrigues boasts an impressive ground game, having earned the title of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion eight times. Although he seldom employs it in matches, his proficiency in ground fighting adds to his versatility as a promising prospect. Rodrigues hones his skills at Kill Cliff FC, a reputable gym that hosts skilled training partners such as Brendan Allen, Vicente Luque, and Gilbert Burns.

Rodrigues’ combat history started in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and incorporated some Olympic wrestling as well. In 2014, he commenced his professional MMA career, competing in various Brazilian fighting leagues. He achieved a record of 7 wins and 2 losses, with 3 knockouts and 3 submissions. In December 2019, Rodrigues secured the SMASH Global middleweight championship against Brandon Hester. This success earned him an opportunity to compete in Dana White’s Contender Series for a UFC contract. Unfortunately, he lost to Jordan Williams via first-round knockout in September 2020, marking the end of his journey in the series at that time.

I was determined not to give up on my dream of becoming a UFC fighter, so I made my way to Legacy Fighting Alliance instead. In just three short months there, I managed to secure two knockout victories and claim the middleweight title in May 2021. My perseverance paid off when I received a call to step in as a late replacement and face Duško Todorović only two weeks later. I gave it my all and won by unanimous decision, earning myself a place on the UFC roster in June 2021. In October 2021, I impressed with a second-round knockout victory over Park Jun-yong, which earned us both the Fight of the Night bonus. Although I lost a split decision to Armen Petrosyan in February 2022, I finished off the year strong with two more knockout wins – one against Julian Marquez, earning me Performance of the Night, and another against Chidi Njokuani, securing us both the Fight of the Night bonus once again.

At UFC 283 in January 2023, Ferreira made an impressive debut with a knockout victory over Rodrigues in just one round. The knockout was fierce, but Rodrigues showed resilience by returning the favor against Denis Tiuliulin at UFC 292 in August 2023, also scoring a first-round knockout. In February 2024, Rodrigues earned a third-round stoppage over Brad Tavares, a fight that came close to being named “Fight of the Night.” With his powerful and relentless style, Rodrigues has established himself as a formidable knockout artist. Opponents who fail to finish him early will find themselves in a lengthy battle, making split decisions a common outcome for Rodrigues’ losses.

Christian Leroy Duncan will look to stop the hype train of Gregory Rodrigues

At UFC 304, Rodrigues has an excellent chance to make an impression. His opponent, a 28-year-old British prospect named Duncan, is known for his aggressive pursuit of knockouts. This will be their first appearance on the PPV main card as middleweights. Rodrigues faces a favorable matchup since Duncan lacks one-punch knockout ability, dislikes being pressed, and may not have faced significant durability tests against powerful opponents. If Rodrigues delivers an impressive victory, he could gain more supporters and potentially earn a spot in the middleweight rankings. With his exceptional talent, Rodrigues is the fighter to keep an eye on at UFC 304.
