Nintendo revokes Splatoon championship title following misconduct
As a dedicated fan of Splatoon and follower of the competitive scene, I was thrilled when Team Jackpot took home the championship title at the Splatoon 3 World Championship in April. Their victory was a testament to their skill and teamwork, and it filled me with pride and excitement to see them represent the community on such a grand stage.
In 2024, the champions of Splatoon 3, Team Jackpot, have had their victory title taken away by Nintendo due to accusations of inappropriate behavior towards some of its players.
We’ve discovered that some members of the winning team, Jackpot, in the Splatoon 3 World Championship, violated our community rules during gameplay. Consequently, their victory will be annulled, and they won’t receive any trophies from the competition.
Approximately three months after winning the World Championship in April, the team’s decision was made public. Jackpot’s lineup includes four players: Leafi, .q, Jared, and Madness. In June, a thread was started on X by Adaptability, another Splatoon player, detailing instances of Jackpot members using racist language. The evidence presented in the thread appears to be screenshots and clips showing members of Jackpot utilizing racial slurs in Discord chats and posts on X, as well as recordings of team members employing derogatory terms towards other players during live streams.
On June 13, team member Q wrote an extensive message in Google Docs under the title “Addressing some concerns.” In this document, Q addressed the accusations and issued apologies for the actions of fellow team members.
I deeply regret not having addressed the inappropriate behavior of my friends “Madness” and “Jared” when their offensive screenshots came to light. At that time, I was unaware of the situation. However, I have since spoken with “Leafi,” and I take full responsibility for not intervening and making things right. The extent of the harm inflicted by all parties involved is beyond description; it’s repulsive, despicable, and something that never should have happened.
TopMob has contacted Leafi and Jared for additional information regarding the matter. At the time of releasing this article, the X account associated with Madness had been disabled. We will keep you informed as we receive new details and make any necessary updates to the article accordingly.
As a longtime gamer and avid fan of competitive esports, I can’t help but feel disappointed when hearing about the vacated win of my favorite team. But what makes this situation even more disheartening is that Nintendo, in their generosity, had commemorated their victory with a special in-game cosmetic item – a Splashtag banner depicting the champions at the championships.
As a long-time gamer and avid fan of Nintendo, I’m thrilled to hear about the upcoming adjustment to the in-game Splashtag banner commemorating winners. This small yet significant change is a testament to Nintendo’s commitment to their players and community.
TopMob reached out to Nintendo for comment as well and we will update as we hear back.
