Gregg Wallace is selling his million-pound house in Kent after being let go by the BBC, explaining he can no longer maintain his previous lifestyle.
John Torode, the former host of MasterChef, was let go by the network last July following an investigation into claims of inappropriate behavior at work. The investigation looked into 83 historical allegations, and 45 of those were confirmed.
Gregg filed a lawsuit against the BBC and BBC Studios Distribution Limited, seeking up to £10,000 in compensation. He claimed they hadn’t protected his personal data, causing him distress and harassment. However, he later dropped the case in February.
The former broadcaster announced on Instagram Sunday that he’s selling his large property – a five-acre estate complete with a house, stables, and a pond.
I’m hearing from Gregg, who purchased his home back in 2017, that he’s making a big lifestyle change. It’s not just about slowing down, though – he’s really focused on building a secure future for his family. His wife, Anne-Marie, is 38, and they have a wonderful six-year-old son, Sid, who is on the autism spectrum, and ensuring Sid’s future is a huge priority for them.
I know my life has changed, and honestly, I was ready for a change, though I certainly didn’t expect it to happen like this.
He explained that he’d like to slow down and relax, but also wants to make sure his family is financially secure. He has a young wife and a son, Sid, who has special needs.
I’m looking for a balance between enjoying life now, providing for my family’s future, and creating something lasting. It’s a tough combination to achieve.
I’m planning to downsize from this large house to something smaller. This will allow me to work less and hopefully spend about six months of the year in Italy, creating fun experiences for my family – we all adore it there.
This news follows Gregg’s announcement that he’s training to become an autism coach, after dropping his legal case against the BBC.
Motivated by his son Sid, who is autistic and doesn’t speak, he’s now dedicated to helping people with autism develop the skills they need to live independently.
This is just the newest of several online businesses for the former presenter. They’ve also made money by creating custom video messages and sponsored content, including recent promotions for a line of ceramic non-stick pans.
In a January Substack post, he argued that the investigation wasn’t conducted according to legal standards and wouldn’t hold up in court, suggesting it was more like an internal company HR review.
He claimed that after his reputation was already suffering, a public request was made for anyone who had previously worked with or met him to share their experiences.
Gregg Wallace, who worked alongside John Torode on MasterChef for almost 20 years, explained that he’s met a huge number of people throughout his career – likely tens of thousands. This included not only the six new contestants each day of filming, but also constantly changing camera crews, fellow TV personalities, and people at charity events and industry gatherings.
He explained that if anyone with a problem, negative feeling, or even a faulty memory were allowed to investigate your life, do you think you’d be able to come out unscathed without anyone filing a complaint?
He stated that almost all of the 45 complaints that were proven valid happened before 2018, which is when he received an official warning about his use of language.
The initial hearing for his £10,000 damages claim was cancelled just before it was scheduled for February 16th. A BBC representative later stated that Wallace had dropped the claim.
They said: ‘Shortly in advance of a hearing, due February 16, Gregg discontinued his claim.
‘He is not receiving any payment in costs or damages from either BBC or BBC Studios.’
Gregg started co-hosting MasterChef in 2005. However, in November 2024, he announced he would temporarily leave the show while claims of inappropriate behavior were looked into.
An investigation by Lewis Silkin law firm confirmed 45 out of 83 claims made against him. These incidents, which largely happened between 2005 and 2018, included one instance of inappropriate touching.
The investigation found that most of the confirmed complaints against Mr. Wallace involved inappropriate sexual jokes and comments. A few other complaints about generally inappropriate language and being inappropriately dressed were also confirmed.
Gregg apologized, saying he was truly sorry if he caused anyone upset and that he never intended to hurt or embarrass anyone.
