I was really struck by Laura Adlington’s honesty today. She shared that she actually weighs more now than she did when she was pregnant, and I found it so refreshing to see her be so open about her postpartum body. It’s a really relatable post and makes me feel a lot less alone in my own journey.
The 36-year-old star of The Great British Bake Off announced in October that she’d welcomed a son, George, after nine years of struggling with infertility and undergoing IVF treatment. She described him as a ‘miracle’ baby.
Laura recently shared photos of her first few months as a new mom, and admitted she doesn’t feel like she’s quickly recovered physically after giving birth, especially when comparing herself to other parents.
The baker has been struggling with the physical changes after having a baby. She’s been exhausted and focused solely on getting through each day while caring for her son, and hasn’t had much time to focus on herself.
Laura explained that since having her son, she hadn’t been eating very well, relying mostly on quick snacks. Now, she’s trying to eat healthier, but also wants to be kind to herself and not put too much pressure on losing weight or changing her body.
She shared her experience with postpartum weight gain, noting that it wasn’t easy to lose weight after having a baby, despite what people often say about breastfeeding helping with weight loss. She wants to openly discuss this common challenge.
It seems like I’ve gained weight – my clothes are tighter now than they were when I was pregnant! Honestly, it’s a bit discouraging.
I’ve been completely overwhelmed lately, barely sleeping and mostly surviving on quick, easy snacks.
‘Does that make me lazy and lacking willpower? Maybe. Maybe not, maybe it just makes me human…
‘Maybe my body was doing its best to keep me going and feed my baby…
I’m working on making healthier choices, but I’m also being gentle with myself and remembering that I don’t need to change who I am.
Not everyone recovers easily, and frankly, my appearance has never been, and will never be, the most important thing about who I am.
She captioned her post: ‘Hoping this helps anyone else who didn’t ”bounce back”.’
Laura announced in October that she welcomed her son, George, after a nine-year struggle with infertility. She had been told she needed to lose 14 stone to have a chance of becoming pregnant, making his birth a dream come true.
The couple announced the birth of their baby by sharing photos online, writing: ‘After nine years of hoping and nine months of pregnancy, our little miracle has finally arrived and we’re overjoyed to have them in our arms.’
Hi everyone, this is George. George, these are the wonderful women in our community who have been supporting you from the start.
We’re overjoyed with the arrival of our baby and are enjoying these first few weeks getting to know him. I just wanted to share the good news and express my sincere gratitude for all your love and support – it truly means the world to us and we’ve felt it throughout this journey.
Laura revealed she was expecting in an Instagram post in April, after privately starting IVF treatment more than a year earlier.
I was so heartbroken to hear about this amazing model. She’d basically given up on having a baby after doctors told her IVF was her only option, but even then, she’d need to lose weight just to qualify for the treatment. It’s just awful that she faced that kind of pressure and hurdle on top of everything else.
She announced some wonderful news, sharing that after nine years of trying to conceive, they are expecting a baby in October thanks to IVF. She described the baby as a ‘miracle’ and admitted they were still overjoyed and surprised.
As someone who understands life’s ups and downs, I want to say that I get it – news like this can be incredibly difficult, particularly if you’re hoping for something or going through a tough time. Please don’t hesitate to take care of yourself – whether that means muting me or unfollowing. Sending you all my love and support.
Getting to this point has been a long and often isolating journey – as many of you who have been following my work or listening to the podcast will understand.
We had come to terms with the possibility that we might not be able to have children naturally. However, about a year and a half ago, we decided to explore IVF as an option.
We decided to keep the news private, not sharing it online or with family, to avoid adding extra stress for ourselves.
After a couple of setbacks with previous attempts, we recently learned that I’m pregnant.
We’ll share more details about how we reached this point soon, but right now, we’re thrilled to finally share our exciting news! We’re incredibly grateful and still can’t believe this is happening.
Laura revealed in 2022 that becoming a mother had always been a dream of hers, even though she had previously chosen not to have children.
In an interview with Fabulous magazine, she shared that experiencing infertility was the most difficult challenge of her life, explaining that unless someone has gone through the pain of wanting a child and being unable to conceive, it’s impossible to fully understand how devastating it can be.
The celebrity, known from the 2020 season of the Channel 4 program, shared that becoming a mother was always a lifelong dream. She explained that she questioned the purpose of life if she wasn’t able to have children.
She explained that while she’s never considered suicide, she has definitely felt like she didn’t want to live. She’s contacted the Samaritans a few times and found their support really helpful.
After talking with her doctors, Laura attempted to lose weight and briefly thought about having weight-loss surgery, but ultimately decided against it.
The actress has dealt with weight issues since childhood, and it was challenging for her to lose weight in preparation for IVF treatment.
She explained that losing so much weight – around 14 stone – was a real challenge, and she worries about whether she’ll always think about it, especially as she gets older.
Laura recently shared that she struggles with mixed feelings about her weight. She said it’s important to be truthful and admitted she’s considered using weight loss injections like Ozempic.
I still think about wanting to be smaller every single day. While I know all bodies are good, I occasionally feel like mine doesn’t quite fit.
I’m trying to break free from the pressures of diet culture, but I sometimes think losing weight would simplify things. I support others making choices about their bodies, yet I’m frustrated with myself for even considering changing mine.
Okay, so I love how I put outfits together and really show off my figure, honestly! But, and this is a big ‘but’, sometimes I just wish shopping wasn’t such a battle. It’s frustrating always having to search extra hard to find things that actually fit and look good, you know? I mean, wouldn’t it be amazing to just walk into a store and grab something without the constant struggle? It’s a silly thing to dwell on, I guess, but it does get to me sometimes.
I believe everyone should feel good in their own skin, but honestly, I struggle with my own self-image sometimes. I encourage others to embrace who they are without trying to change, yet I occasionally find myself wishing I didn’t feel so… noticeable.
I understand weight loss injections aren’t a simple solution, but it’s hard to ignore all the attention they’re getting, and seeing so many people use them makes me consider it. I want to challenge unrealistic beauty expectations, but I also admit I’d like to feel good about how I look.
She went on to say that she often feels lost because of these conflicting feelings. Her relationship with her body and with food is complicated and difficult, and it feels risky to share that. However, she believes being honest is important.
The popular Great British Bake Off contestant recently shared that she used to focus on losing weight, hoping it would improve her sex life, before learning to accept and love herself.
Laura explained that she frequently delayed doing things because of her weight. She believed she’d have more fun with activities like sex, travel, and vacations if she lost weight.
Now that Laura has gained self-assurance, she’s decided to stop delaying her plans, realizing that life is too short to wait.
In a recent interview, Laura shared that she used to avoid trying new things and often delayed plans, telling herself she’d do them ‘when I was younger.’
I used to tell myself that I’d become a better, more adventurous version of myself – traveling more, having stronger friendships, and enjoying a fuller life. But really, I was just delaying living. Covid reminded us that life is precious and doesn’t last forever.
Don’t let your body size or any self-doubt hold you back from fully enjoying life. Everyone deserves to live a big, fulfilling life.
