Godzilla’s Monsterverse Still Has 7 Mystery Titans Left To Reveal

The movie Godzilla: King of the Monsters, released seven years ago, revealed that there are many more giant creatures – called Titans – on Earth than previously known. The film confirmed the existence of eleven colossal Titans in addition to popular monsters like Godzilla, Kong, Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah.

As a huge Monsterverse fan, I remember when they first started revealing the Titans! Back in 2019, they showed us their names and general locations on screen, but kept everything else a mystery. Because a lot of the names have roots in mythology, fans immediately started theorizing about what these creatures actually looked like. Over time, though, the Monsterverse has slowly started confirming those theories and showing us what some of them are really all about.

Despite their importance, most of these Titans are still unknown. Only four out of the eleven have appeared in any official Monsterverse movies or shows.

The Monsterverse Has Revealed Only 4 Of King Of The Monsters’ Mystery Titans

The novelization of Godzilla: King of the Monsters gave a thorough description of Mokele-Mbembe, one of the Titans that had been missing. Mokele-Mbembe is a monster resembling an elephant and was the creature hidden by smoke on a monitor screen during the film.

Following the movie Godzilla vs. Kong, the comic book Godzilla: Dominion introduced Godzilla to two new Titans: Tiamat and Amhuluk. While Amhuluk hasn’t appeared since, Tiamat eventually made her live-action debut in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Before the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla encountered both Tiamat and another Godzilla while he was protecting the Earth. He let them both live at that time, but later killed Tiamat in Godzilla: The New Empire to gain her abilities.

As a huge Monsterverse fan, I was so excited when Skull Island: Rise of Kong came out last year! It was the first game actually set within the official storyline, taking place before the events of Kong: Skull Island. The game finally gave us a deeper look at Abaddon, and it turns out that terrifying creature is a giant, spider-like Titan! It was awesome to learn more about the history of Skull Island and see this new threat revealed.

The Monsterverse’s 7 Unrevealed Titans Explained

Legends like Yamata no Orochi, Typhon, Leviathan, Baphomet, Quetzalcoatl, Sekhmet, and Bunyip haven’t shown up in the Monsterverse yet, but fans are looking for hints about when and how they might appear. Right now, we only have a few clues, and much about these monsters remains a mystery.

The director of King of the Monsters, Michael Dougerty, has revealed that Yamata No Orochi, like the legendary creature it’s based on, is a dragon with multiple heads – potentially making it a similar threat to Ghidorah. It’s also believed that the mythical Leviathan inspired reports of the Loch Ness Monster, suggesting this new creature will be a type of sea monster.

Quetzalcoatl is often described as a winged serpent, which suggests it might share physical traits with the Warbats seen in Godzilla vs. Kong. Similarly, because Bunyip is a creature from folklore said to live in swamps, it’s possible a crocodile-like Titan could exist in the Monsterverse.

I’ve been reading about these ancient figures, and it’s fascinating! From what I understand, Sekhmet might have originally been imagined as a powerful, lion-like Titan. And Typhon? Well, it seems he could be another dragon figure. Baphomet is a bit trickier – the history points to something definitely evil, but it’s hard to say much more about what exactly it is.

When The Monsterverse’s 7 Missing Titans Could Appear

Given that the Monsterverse continues to build on the developments introduced in King of the Monsters, we can likely expect to learn more about these elements soon. With three new projects on the way – Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and a spin-off focused on the Lee Shaw character – there are plenty of opportunities to expand the story.

The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and its planned spinoff series happen earlier in the Monsterverse’s history than King of the Monsters. This means they can show us how some of the previously hidden Titans were first found. For example, the new Titan called Titan X might actually be Leviathan.

It’s possible we’ve already seen one of the missing Titans in a live-action film. The Ion Dragon from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was known to Monarch before 2019 and, although defeated by Godzilla in 2015, his death wasn’t confirmed. This suggests he might have survived by hibernating at one of Monarch’s hidden bases, potentially making him either Baphomet or Typhon.

The upcoming movie, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, might reveal the origins of one or two of the Titans. If SpaceGodzilla proves to be a truly formidable foe, Godzilla could even awaken the Titans from hibernation to help fight him in a massive final battle.

After defeating Ghidorah and establishing dominance over the Titans, it’s likely Godzilla could command them in battle. If he does, we might see some of the friendlier Titans join the fight. Furthermore, the filmmakers’ use of Tiamat to trigger Godzilla’s new evolved form proves they’re willing to bring even previously unseen Titans into the story, potentially playing important roles in future films.

Ultimately, Godzilla: King of the Monsters laid a strong foundation for the future of the Monsterverse. The film introduced creatures with rich mythological origins, allowing filmmakers to develop compelling and either frightening or spectacular monsters that can appear alongside Godzilla and Kong in upcoming movies and series.
