George R.R. Martin reportedly thinking about his legacy as he works on The Winds of Winter
As a devoted fan who has been following George R.R. Martin’s epic saga for over two decades, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions when hearing about his struggles with finishing “The Winds of Winter.” The anticipation for this book is like the long winter that never seems to end – endless, frustrating, and yet somehow, hopeful.
Every year, a convention called Bubonicon takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, humorously named after the Bubonic Plague, with a rodent mascot to match. This year’s event occurred last weekend, and one of its main attractions was a speech by George R.R. Martin, who lives just an hour away from Albuquerque in Santa Fe, New Mexico. At this point, it appears that the talk wasn’t recorded, but people who attended are sharing their impressions. It’s essential to approach these secondhand accounts with caution, but they’re still worth considering.
The main account comes from a Redditor named nickrl, who has since deleted their post. Nevertheless, it lives on on places like Westeros.org. “There was not some huge ASOIAF update,” nickrl wrote. “He said he was still working on [The Winds of Winter] and that he was really stressed about it and worrying/thinking about his legacy a lot. He was actually really vulnerable and heartfelt about his struggles.”
For quite some time now, Martin has been laboring over “The Winds of Winter,” the sixth installment in his epic “Song of Ice and Fire” series. To be precise, it’s been 13 years since he started working on it. Due to its prolonged absence, it’s often referred to as the elusive “great white whale” of the fantasy genre. The initial season of HBO’s adaptation of the series, “Game of Thrones,” was released while fans eagerly anticipated “The Winds of Winter.” Now, we’re two seasons into the spinoff series “House of the Dragon.” One can’t help but wonder if it will ever be published.
One angle on this is that Martin, who is 75 years old, shouldn’t worry about completing his series and just enjoy his golden years. He’s been writing the books for decades and I think some fans worry that whatever toll it’s now taking on his mental health isn’t worth it. But according to nickrl, “now I think that finishing the books IS what would make him the most happy. He talked about visiting Tolkien’s grave and being struck by all the memorials left behind by fans. He said he dreamed of leaving such a legacy but worried that he wouldn’t if he didn’t finish. He also said he thinks of his characters as his children (like all authors do) and that he really wanted them to outlive him.”
He didn’t seem bored or fed up with ASOIAF, he seemed like he still loved it and had so many ideas he still wanted to bring to life.
It’s pleasing news indeed, Martin’s continued dedication to his work doesn’t surprise me; I’ve always assumed that his delay was due to him striving for the best possible outcome. A fellow Redditor, brachycephalopod, shared a similar tale during their visit to Bubonicon.
He was very open and honest about how the recent years have been stressful and he is easily distracted. He is not finished with Winds but working on it. He is thinking a lot about his legacy and whether to focus on writing or the TV shows…He visited Tolkien’s grave and was touched by all the tributes. Wants a legacy like that. Talked a lot about how the books are his children but also how TV is very rewarding because you can see your ideas come to life.
It’s no surprise that a man nearing 80, like Martin, is contemplating his lasting impact. After all, we eagerly await the release of The Winds of Winter, not to mention any other potential books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series that might wrap up this epic tale. I hope he can strike a balance between meeting expectations and enjoying his own life.
As of now, a publication date for “The Winds of Winter” hasn’t been announced. Instead, HBO is adapting the books written by George R.R. Martin and moving forward with them. On the other hand, the third season of “House of the Dragon” is projected to premiere in 2026, while a new series titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is expected to debut in 2025.
