Gemma Atkinson brushes off pinch gate with a huge grin after she hit back at mum-shamers who criticised her for nipping her one-year-old son ‘to teach him a lesson’
As a seasoned parent myself, I can certainly empathize with Gemma Atkinson’s experiences as she navigates the challenging yet rewarding world of parenthood. Watching her children grow and develop is undoubtedly one of life’s greatest joys, even if it means dealing with tantrums and the occasional pinching incident.
On Thursday, Gemma Atkinson handled the criticism with a wide smile in Manchester, following accusations that she disciplined her one-year-old son by reprimanding him gently.
The former soap star, 39, recently hit back at mum-shamers who criticised her for nipping her son Thiago ‘to teach him a lesson’.
On Tuesday, it was disclosed that Gemma admitted to her 2 million followers she playfully pinched Thiago as a form of payback after their child did the same to her own daughter Mia, who is five years old.
Amidst efforts to leave behind the “pinch gate” scandal, Gemma, mother of Mia and Thiago with her partner Gorka Márquez (aged 34), entered the Hits Radio station with a lively demeanor.
Some parents felt her actions were a bad form of punishment, with Jo Studholme, editor of Parenting Expert, admitting it is ‘harmful’.

Jo advised TopMob, “Rebuking a child by pinching them as a method of discipline isn’t just inefficient, it can also cause harm.
‘It teaches children that violence is an acceptable way to resolve conflict.
Instead, consider employing constructive methods like time-outs, revoking certain privileges, or having a peaceful conversation with the child regarding their actions.
Gemma defended her actions on Wednesday in an Instagram story after receiving heaps of backlash.
She said: ‘Thiago is going through that phase where he’s nipping and biting.
The other day, I told him he had bitten Mia, so I mimed pinching my fingers together and said, ‘Yes, we don’t bite.’
‘I didn’t ‘uuur’ (insinuating pain while pretending to pinch her own arm), as if I would?’
Originally, this actor from Hollyoaks and Emmerdale, who had a stint on a reality TV show with Gorka and their shared two kids on W Channel, shared a post on Instagram Stories to emphasize the unique behaviors exhibited by each of her children.

‘Noticeably, Mia behaves differently towards Thiago. It’s entertaining to observe. Instead of playing gently with toys, she either bangs or slides them across the floor, and it appears that she has developed new tantrums, which wasn’t a characteristic of her before.’
He feigns tears and falls to the floor. I stay standing, observing until he understands that this isn’t helping and the tantrum is gradually dying down.
In response to being pinched, she says: ‘When he feels frustrated, he pinches. Last Wednesday, I gave him a pinch back because he had been rough with Mia. Since then, he hasn’t done it again.’
Gemma regularly shares her ups and downs of parenting life on social media.
In March, it was disclosed that Thiago suffered from an ear ailment, whereas in the previous December, she defended herself against critics who claimed she was disseminating false information by weaning her child at only four months of age.
She wrote: ‘That’s why I always say ppl should do their own research.
A personal physical therapist for babies shared with me that a baby’s ability to sit without support is determined by their weight and size rather than anything to do with what they eat. As a result, each baby achieves this milestone at various times.
In addition to her role as a host on Hits Radio, Gemma addressed comments from online critics following a conversation about her young daughter Mia’s enthusiasm for CrossFit, which occurred when Mia was only two years old.
She wrote: ‘I received this message about Mia loving CrossFit and the ‘should be watching kids’ programmes’ baffled me a little.’
One of our friends, who’s renowned as one of the top CrossFit athletes globally, leaves Mia spellbound when she visits us. The youngster looks up to her admiringly, impressed not only by her impressive physical strength but also her agility and gymnastics skills.
“Gemma mentioned that we usually enjoy ice cream, pizza, and candy from the cinema each weekend. Delicious ice cream after dinner and pancakes every Sunday.
I’m thrilled that Mia enjoys sports, has influential role models, and voluntarily watches the games herself. Frankly, I could do without watching them myself.
