FromSoftware boss Hidetaka Miyazaki says “we still intend to develop single-player focused games” even as The Duskbloods follows Elden Ring Nightreign into multiplayer
Despite recent releases like Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods venturing into multiplayer experiences, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the regular director at FromSoftware and creator of Dark Souls series, assures fans that the studio remains committed to developing single-player games, which have been instrumental in establishing its reputation.
In simpler terms, Elden Ring Nightreign is the upcoming cooperative version of the studio’s massive open-world adventure game, Elden Ring. This game allows up to three players to team up, fight enemies, gather loot, and attempt to defeat a final boss. It seems like a fun experiment from the studio using existing assets from Elden Ring.
However, quite a stir occurred when it was disclosed that The Duskbloods, the latest production from the director behind Bloodborne, Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls, and Elden Ring, is not only a game but also features multiplayer elements with both PvP (Player vs Player) and PvE (Player vs Environment) aspects. This announcement has led many to speculate that FromSoftware might be moving towards an increased focus on online games in their future projects.
In the voice of the Creator, Nintendo’s blog features Hidetaka Miyazaki clarifying a point. He notes, “I’d like to take a moment to address something. Although Elden Ring is primarily an online multiplayer game, it doesn’t signify that we at the company are moving towards a more multiplayer-centric approach for future titles. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring is still in development, and we remain committed to creating single player games that embody our traditional style.
What led to The Duskbloods being designed as a multiplayer game? Miyazaki expresses his fascination with PvPvE games since they offer an expansive canvas for game design concepts, while drawing upon our expertise in creating challenging enemy encounters. However, fear not if you’re not into competing against other players – there are numerous objectives scattered throughout the game that don’t require player versus player interactions, and some matches even have you collaborating with friendly opponents.
