From Boring to Captivating: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s Remarkable Transformation

It’s common knowledge that I wasn’t particularly fond of the first edition of Kingdom Come: Deliverance. To me, it felt overly complex, plagued with bugs, and most crucially, dull. The game seemed to prioritize realism over genuine entertainment, which didn’t sit well with me. In essence, it wasn’t really my preferred choice. However, fortunately for Warhorse Studios, the game resonated deeply with millions of gamers, enabling them to secure a position for a follow-up title.

In “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2”, the power struggle between King Wenceslas and his brother Sigismund in the 15th century escalates, splitting the land asunder. Not long after the first game’s events, protagonist Henry, accompanied by his old friend Sir Hans Capon, journeys to Trosky as a peace ambassador. As the lords of the realm aim to halt the destructive war plaguing their lands, chaos ensues, and young Henry finds himself at the center of a series of uncanny mishaps. Throughout its twists and turns, “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2” promises an exhilarating journey filled with betrayal and triumph, ensuring to enthrall any player who ventures into the picturesque yet deceptive world of Bohemia.

Similar to the initial version, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 spins a gripping yarn of two contrasting factions, punctuated by numerous pulse-pounding scenes. One instant you’re warding off approaching forces trying to capture a fortress that traps you, and the next you’re covertly infiltrating another fortress or disguising yourself as a servant to extract information from Sigismund directly. The game is rich with moments and setpieces that showcase an impressive range of events. Warhorse Studios has proven yet again its ability to weave a dynamic narrative while maintaining each scene as engaging as the last.

Initially, the original “Kingdom Come” didn’t have the problem you mentioned. Instead, it was a challenge to survive, constantly dealing with eating, sleeping, or healing wounds. It prioritized realism over fun, which raises the question: what’s the purpose of video games if they aren’t enjoyable? Fortunately, the sequel has addressed every legitimate concern I had with the original, so that problem no longer exists. Now, everything feels more balanced and efficient.

In the upcoming game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, you won’t need to constantly eat every few minutes or sleep after every twenty hours to maintain your basic needs. Instead, it may take a long time for hunger and fatigue to become issues. Additionally, fast travel seems quicker, which is convenient. Moreover, with the right skills, you can sprint at an impressive speed and run without tiring, enhancing your gameplay experience. Warhorse Studios has reduced the level of realism in favor of more player-friendly mechanics, but still maintains the essence of the original game, making it even more enjoyable to play.

In the sequel, realism isn’t neglected; you’ll still find yourself tackling tedious tasks and eavesdropping on conversations. However, the tasks that once felt like chores are now more streamlined, making them less tedious. Consequently, the game has significantly improved. If you appreciated the smithing or alchemy from the first game, don’t worry, those elements are still very much present in the sequel and even expanded upon. The game remains a massive RPG with enough depth to satisfy stat enthusiasts like myself, but Warhorse Studios has polished off the dull parts of the original.

In my opinion, even though the initial parts of the game can be challenging, the game’s balance seems slightly off-kilter. The early stages, especially combat, can feel quite difficult, but once you surmount that hurdle, acquire decent armor and master skills like Master Strike, you might find yourself overwhelmingly powerful. I went from being easily defeated by a farmer wielding an axe, to effortlessly defeating dozens of bandits on my own without receiving a single blow. Was I improving? Not really. Did I get better gear and access to new abilities? Absolutely. And yes, I understand that this is an RPG, and that’s typically how RPGs function. However, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 seems to focus less on character development and more on the equipment you amass.

Although Warhorse Studios significantly advanced the balance between realism and enjoyment in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, its performance remains a step sideways with ongoing bugs and crashes. Despite improvements over the original, these issues persist, causing frequent save reloads, game restarts, or even full console resets to maintain functionality. Frankly, there aren’t many recent games that compare in terms of such problems. To call Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 ‘rough around the edges’ is an understatement.

To clarify, when I refer to “bugs,” I’m not speaking metaphorically about nuisances like a pet stepping on your toes or console games being difficult to crack. Instead, I’m talking about genuine technical glitches. Fortunately, I always had Saviour Schnapps handy (a save-game drink) so my progress wasn’t severely impacted, even though it meant occasional minor setbacks. It’s still a significant hassle. Additionally, the option to save at the exit is quite useful, so if you decide to play this game, remember to utilize that feature frequently!

To be honest, despite its issues, I found myself truly appreciating Warhorse’s follow-up to their 2018 cult favorite, which is unexpected for me to admit. The studio has managed an extraordinary feat by transforming my view of the series in just one game. Compared to the sequel of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, the leap forward is so significant and unprecedented that it could potentially be ranked among the best sequels ever made, in certain aspects. What was once one of the most tedious games I’ve played, has now become an engaging journey filled with innovative concepts. The shift from a realistic approach to prioritizing entertainment and impact in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has breathed new life into this franchise.
