John Walsh, who used to be a senior producer at Channel Nine, has spoken out to support the reality show, Married At First Sight.
After leaving the show last year after nine seasons as Executive Producer, Walsh spoke out just before the premiere of season 13, defending the often-criticized reality TV series. He stated it’s intentionally bold, stays current with cultural trends, and isn’t as malicious as some people believe.
In a piece for 9Honey, Walsh explained that he finally feels comfortable sharing his thoughts openly, without appearing to prioritize his own needs.
Walsh admitted she’s no longer personally affected by criticism of the show, noting that it happens every year.
Walsh acknowledged the job had its challenges, but he thoroughly enjoyed the experience, calling it a constantly exciting and fast-paced program.
Married At First Sight, he argued, was never meant to be comfortable viewing.
He admitted the show was difficult for everyone involved – both the viewers and those making it. Then, with little sympathy, he simply said, ‘Cry me a river.’
Okay, so I’ve been obsessed with this show, and honestly, what I love is that the creator, Walsh, basically admitted it wasn’t about finding ‘happily ever after’! He said the whole point was to start a conversation – could a marriage built by experts actually work when everyone’s just swiping on apps these days? It’s not about perfect endings, it’s about asking the tough questions, and I’m totally here for it!
He highlighted the show’s incredible success around the world, explaining that it’s been the top-rated program in Australia for almost ten years and now airs in over 120 countries, proving how much of an impact it’s had.
In the UK, the Australian version regularly outperforms the local edition.
According to Walsh, that success is no accident.
‘This is not by accident or good fortune. The show is daring and risk taking,’ he wrote.
He explained that every season of the show tackles difficult, yet realistic issues like relationships, betrayal, manipulation, and imbalances of power – things we often see in real life, including topics like sex, cheating, control, and distrust.
Let’s be honest, it’s draining just thinking about everything that goes into it! That’s why so many of us love to watch – it’s a chance to see someone else tackle the tough stuff. We get to be the observers, offering our opinions without having to face any of the fallout ourselves. It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure, isn’t it?
He firmly denied accusations that the show portrays contestants as exaggerated or fake, explaining that they are simply ordinary people from Australia, not unusual characters.
He explained that these people are all around us – they’re the ones who cut our hair, help with our taxes, repair our homes, educate our children, help us stay in shape, and care for us when we’re sick.
Walsh admitted that the show’s participants sometimes act poorly, but explained that this is understandable considering the intense stress of marrying someone they barely know and living with a group of people while constantly being filmed for up to three months.
He explained that facing our own flaws can be unpleasant, and sometimes we discover less appealing qualities in ourselves than we expected – hoping to find the good within, we might instead confront our darker side.
Walsh emphasized that the show doesn’t aim to create neat, happy resolutions or force characters into conventional roles. It’s not about providing easy or expected outcomes.
He explained that their goal is simply to watch, record, and accept whatever happens, whether it’s good or bad.
He also explained that the show takes participant well-being seriously. They have clear rules and support systems, including a dedicated internal wellness team, access to outside counselors, and advice on handling social media attention that comes with becoming instantly famous.
Even so, Walsh noted that a small but vocal group continues to criticize the show, regularly sending complaints and petitions to the cast, producers, and network demanding its cancellation.
He likened the current criticism to previous overreactions, pointing to the time when Elvis Presley’s performances were censored – cameras weren’t allowed to film him below the waist.
He suggested that if a dinner party on Married At First Sight can cause significant societal disruption, then Australia faces much larger issues than just reality TV drama.
Mark Walsh is retiring after 31 years with Channel Nine, where he played a key role in the success of popular shows like Married At First Sight Australia, Getaway, and The Voice.
Coworkers honored Walsh, with Nine’s Digital Editorial Director calling him the creative force behind many iconic Australian television programs.
Although he’s moving away from managing TV shows, Walsh isn’t leaving Nine altogether. He’ll continue working with the company by writing travel articles for nine.com.au.
As a longtime observer of reality TV and relationships, I have to say, Shannon Walsh really resonated with a lot of us – including the experts on Married At First Sight! John Aiken, Mel Schilling, and Alessandra Rampolla all publicly shared their admiration for him. John even called him a ‘wonderful man’ and expressed gratitude for everything Shannon brought to the show. It’s always heartwarming to see genuine connection and positive contributions acknowledged.
