Former Death in Paradise star says it was “scary” leaving show for new BBC role

As a seasoned gamer of both the small screen and the big stage, I must confess that the transition from Officer Marlon Pryce to Daniel Walker in Mr Loverman has been nothing short of exhilarating yet petrifying. Having immersed myself in the world of Death in Paradise for four years, stepping into a new character with fresh complexities and struggles was certainly daunting. It’s like swapping my trusty controller for an unfamiliar game console – nerve-wracking but ultimately rewarding!

Tahj Miles confessed that joining the cast of Mr. Loverman felt “terrifying” after leaving Death in Paradise.

In the gaming world, I’ve always been the one to dive headfirst into new adventures. But back in 2021, I found myself stepping off the virtual battlefield and onto the set of Death in Paradise. There, I took on the role of Officer Marlon Pryce, a character that brought a unique twist to my gaming persona. However, this March, the game took a heartbreaking turn as my character had to leave for Jamaica to care for his ailing sister, leaving fans and me with a bittersweet goodbye.

In the forthcoming gay drama by BBC titled “Mr Loverman“, Miles will be shown next, portraying a 74-year-old character from Antigua who is about to reveal his homosexuality after being married to the same woman for half a century.

Miles shared with RadioTimes.com that when he secured the job, it was delightful to realize he could work on something beyond just “Death in Paradise,” as it offered a refreshing change.

However, finding myself shifting into an entirely new character after being immersed as Marlon for four years was quite daunting. This new persona brings a set of unique challenges and struggles that were initially intimidating.

The movie titled “Mr Loverman” features Lennie James portraying Barrington ‘Barry’ Jedidiah Walker, who secretly carries on a passionate relationship with his friend Morris (Ariyon Bakare), all while hiding it from his wife, played by Sharon D Clarke.

Miles portrays the role of Daniel, Barry’s 17-year-old grandson, who grapples with personal apprehensions while preparing for college life.

Miles explained that this aspect of life is intended to be uncomplicated and straightforward. Essentially, you attend school, interact with friends, and then return home without much fuss.

However, as I reminisced about my past [at the age of 17], I found myself reflecting that it was quite a chaotic period due to the numerous challenges and issues one has to navigate through at that time.

As a thrilled enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and dread. There’s an abundance of moments that excite me, yet they also fill me with a sense of trepidation.

Beginning Monday, October 14th, the television adaptation of “Mr. Loverman,” penned by Bernadine Evaristo, will be available for viewing on both BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
