Five essential rock guitarists missing from the BBC’s new top 31

The BBC recently released its ranking of the greatest rock guitarists ever. They’ve chosen 31 players, which is a bit of an unusual number for a ‘best of’ list – maybe they struggled to narrow it down to just 30!

Creating any list is difficult because deciding who to include and exclude is always subjective. There are bound to be debates and differing opinions, as everyone has their own preferences – artists they love and those they don’t.

I won’t repeat the full list of 31 items from the BBC article – that would take away from their work, and it’s easy to find online if you’re interested. I also agree with everything they included; it’s a well-curated list and each item deserves to be there.

The five essential rock guitarists missing from the BBC’s list

Rather than stick to a fixed number, I’m adding five more crucial rock guitarists who deserve recognition. It means the list will be a bit longer, totaling 36, but it’s worth it.

Alex Lifeson

Alex Lifeson, the incredibly talented guitarist from Rush, deserves recognition. His recent performance at the Juno Awards proved he’s still at the top of his game and a true master of his craft.

Even if Alex Lifeson isn’t at his peak anymore, his incredible work with Rush speaks for itself. He’s not a flashy guitarist who seeks the spotlight, but his complex and highly skilled playing is truly impressive. Lifeson’s rich and evocative guitar work was essential to Rush’s sound, making him a vital part of the band.

Tom Morello

Does Tom Morello deserve a spot as well? His legendary work with Rage Against the Machine is enough on its own, but he’s done so much more. Morello has a truly distinctive playing style, known for his creative use of effects and his signature on/off pickup technique – almost like a DJ scratching on a guitar.

Just like with Geddy Lee, we’ve been seeing a lot of Roy Bittan recently. He’s currently touring with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and appears prominently in videos from their concerts in Minneapolis this week.

Morello is playing exceptionally well. Both he and the members of Rage Against the Machine, as well as Rush’s Lifeson, are Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. He absolutely deserves to be considered one of the best guitarists.

Nils Lofgren

So, Morello’s been kinda in and out with Bruce and the band lately, but Nils Lofgren is a real mainstay – he’s been around for ages. I definitely noticed him during the recent show, both visually and with his playing. Plus, he’s got that Hall of Fame badge, which he earned being in the E Street Band, so you know he’s a legend!

Before working with his famous bandleader, Lofgren was already a respected musician. He’d also played with Neil Young and Crazy Horse, which speaks volumes about his talent. A rock and blues guitarist, he’s known for his skillful finger-picking technique, contributing impressive lead work, solos, and subtle touches to songs. He’s considered a truly exceptional guitarist, highly admired by other musicians.

If I could add two members from the E Street Band, I’d choose Loffren alongside Morello. However, that brings up a problem: what about Stevie Van Zandt? Should he be included too?

Honestly, three guitar players in one band feels like a bit much for me! I’ll admit, though, Van Zandt definitely could have been on my top five list instead of Morello or Lofgren, but I’m happy with the five I chose.

John Frusciante

It’s possible some people have strong opinions about John Frusciante and his band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. However, their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is well-deserved. They’re a band that often divides people – many feel comfortable disliking them, despite their success.

John Frusciante is a highly talented guitarist who deserves recognition. His playing style is instantly recognizable and sets him apart – he uniquely blends punk and funk with an energetic, powerful sound. Regardless of what you think of his band, Frusciante’s contributions are significant and he should be considered among the best.

Peter Frampton

Peter Frampton is most famous for his live album, and for good reason – it was a massive success. While some people aren’t fans of live albums, this one definitely highlights his incredible guitar skills.

He first became known for his guitar work with bands like the Herd and Humble Pie. Since then, he’s continued to play guitar at an incredibly high level as a solo artist, even after releasing that live album. Despite facing health challenges, he remains one of the best guitar players today. Plus, his contributions to music have been recognized with his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
