Failing Some Quests In Avowed Can Actually Make A Better Story
In much the same way as other RPGs, Avowed‘s plot unfolds differently depending on the missions players finish and the decisions they make. While most gamers aim to complete all possible quests for the “best” storyline, it’s worth noting that Avowed might offer a more impactful narrative if players fail one quest. This doesn’t mean things improve for the game’s characters; quite the contrary, they suffer more. However, this hardship can also introduce significant dramatic moments to the storyline that seem less potent when every side quest is completed.

In the game Avowed, the mission at hand is called Steel Resolve, located within the Emerald Stair region. Finishing this quest and making the correct decisions can help the Envoy reduce harm when Steel Garrote attacks Fior mes Ivèrno. If the quest isn’t accomplished, Fior will be destroyed. Although saving Fior is the preferred outcome in Avowed, from a viewer’s perspective, the game’s story becomes more impactful if Fior is permitted to perish, as this failure adds significance to future narrative developments.

Earlier Parts Of The Game Don’t Have Any Major Disasters Like This
Initially, the mission of the Envoy in the Living Lands is of significant significance. However, the primary storyline of Avowed begins with a more personal touch. To start, the Envoy’s goal is to reach Paradis, and upon their arrival, they are tasked with identifying the individual who attempted to take their life. It isn’t until the Emerald Stair that the main quest of Avowed expands its focus, emphasizing the repercussions of the Envoy’s actions on the Living Lands as a whole. This makes the destruction of Fior an ideal pivotal moment.
Prior to the events in Fior, the impact of the Envoy’s actions appears limited, with only minor repercussions. However, in the game Avowed, it’s unusual for things not to go well for the Envoy during the early stages, including their assassination being a trivial obstacle. Therefore, the burning of Fior serves as the Envoy’s initial encounter with failure in the Living Lands, acting as a reminder of the realities they face in this world.
By sparing Fior from complete devastation, the emotional impact of the event on the Envoy character is somewhat reduced. Not only does the city stand stronger, but the Envoy can take pride in their efforts to minimize the destruction. This sense of accomplishment might offer benefits within the gameplay, yet it pales in comparison to the profound effect a major failure would have on the character’s narrative development.
As a dedicated player, I can’t help but feel the weight of each attack on Fior, whether or not the Envoy finishes Steel Resolve. However, it’s less heart-wrenching when the city remains standing afterward. Witnessing an entire city reduced to rubble under our care is a far more profound and emotional blow compared to just seeing it damaged. The destruction of Fior amplifies the dramatic impact and effectively portrays the Steel Garrote’s power in a more meaningful way.
If Fior Is Destroyed, The Steel Garrote Seem Like More Intimidating Villains
Foiling The Villains’ Plots Too Early Makes Them Seem Weak
In the game “Avowed”, there’s a distinct sense of antagonism towards the Steel Garrote faction. Unlike the game’s ambiguous moral stance, they appear to be the villains, not only committing violence against the people of the Living Lands but also seemingly enjoying it. This isn’t limited to the game’s main antagonist, the Inquisitor Lödwyn. Even lower-ranking Garrote officers like Captain Aelfyr and Captain Carnet seem to take pleasure in eliminating anyone who opposes them.
As the Steel Garrote becomes increasingly victorious in their assault on Fior, they appear all the more formidable as an adversarial element within Avowed’s storyline. The Emerald Stair serves as the initial location where players will directly engage with the Steel Garrote; encountering them while they are ravaging Fior leaves a far greater impact than if one’s first interaction is thwarting their schemes.
During the Steel Resolve quest, players can’t entirely prevent the Steel Garrote from causing harm, but they can lessen its impact – both within the game’s universe and in terms of audience perception. Since the final outcome remains largely unchanged regardless of player choices, making the Steel Garrote more effective in its attack enhances the storyline. This not only amplifies the fear factor of the Steel Garrote, but also adds a dramatic twist to some of the Envoy’s companions’ stories.
Fior’s Destruction Is A Stronger Motivator For Giatta
Giatta And Other NPCs Are Deeply Affected By The Events In Fior
Among the Envoy’s associates, Giatta holds a deep connection with the city of Fior. Not just because it’s her birthplace, but because her parents are still residing there when the city is set ablaze. Whether the city is completely incinerated or partially damaged, Giatta’s feelings towards the Steel Garrote run particularly deep. However, if the city is utterly destroyed, her motivation becomes even more intense. Instead of saying, “they burned parts of the city I lived in and now there will need to be some repairs,” she might exclaim something like, “they annihilated my home, and I can never return.
In various discussions with Giatta and other characters, the fate of Fior often arises. References to Fior’s past carry a greater emotional impact when the city no longer exists, and to some extent, the Envoy is held accountable for failing to prevent its destruction. The burning of Fior significantly amplifies the dramatic tension in the game’s latter stages.
The Stakes Are Higher In Avowed If Fior Is Destroyed
Fior’s Destruction Sets A Tone For The Rest Of Avowed
Witnessing Fior’s devastation instills a sense of impending peril about what might transpire next, effectively elevating the tension in the narrative. This is particularly true when Fior is only partially destroyed, but observing such extreme destruction serves as an effective means of establishing the gravity of the story’s events. For instance, the climax of Star Wars would arguably be less impactful if Alderaan had merely experienced minor damage earlier in the tale, instead of being completely annihilated.
As a devoted fan, I find myself grappling with the perspective of an impartial observer when it comes to immersive choice-based games like “Avowed.” Unlike passive observers, players become the protagonist, and naturally, we root for our character’s success. In this case, most players would likely wish the best for their character, meaning they’d strive to save Fior. However, adopting a detached viewpoint as a mere storyteller reveals that the narrative of “Avowed” functions more effectively when players make significant mistakes.
