After much anticipation due to numerous leaks and speculation about its release date, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has officially been unveiled! Since then, players have been diligently re-creating some of the ugliest characters from the original RPG. In fact, their creations are so grotesque that they’ve even attracted the attention of a former Bethesda Game Studios team leader.
Jeffery “Jeff” Gardiner, formerly a developer at Bethesda and producer for iconic games like Oblivion (2006) and Skyrim, shares an intriguing tidbit in an online post. It turns out that developers, just like fans, have fun creating peculiar expressions within RPGs, and it seems they were quite fond of this activity during the development of Oblivion. Gardiner mentioned that towards the end of the game’s development, everyone would compete to see who could create the most absurd face during playtesting.
Gardiner commends an amusingly popular screenshot depicting a player’s character, “Sir Vancealot” – a chilling in-game representation of US Vice President JD Vance – in Oblivion Remastered, acknowledging that it’s quirky enough to have probably claimed the prize in Bethesda’s internal competition. Upon examining the screenshot myself, I’d say there’s a good chance that fan-created Sir Vancealot would have indeed taken the top spot.
