The 21 Worst Movies of the 21st Century So Far

21. Basic Instinct 2 (2006)
Sharon Stone is remarkably skilled at making even weak lines of dialogue sound seductive, almost unbelievably so. However, despite her talent, Basic Instinct 2 is a complete failure. Stone delivers a far more energetic performance than her co-star, David Morrissey, whose character never feels like a match for hers. It’s hard to understand her attraction to him, as she seems to view him as an easy target for manipulation. Stone clearly enjoys toying with him, but Morrissey’s character is so bland that there’s no real suspense or excitement. The dynamic feels completely unbalanced, like watching a professional team play against amateurs. Her character is meant to crave danger, but there’s no risk involved when she’s up against someone so unchallenging.

20. The Book of Henry (2017)
Colin Trevorrow’s follow-up to Jurassic World, The Book of Henry, was a critical and commercial failure, and it’s a remarkably strange film. It mixes fantastical elements with disturbing themes, and surprisingly, it can also be interpreted as a religious allegory about sacrifice and redemption. The plot involves a deceased child prodigy guiding his mother to become an assassin, all while dealing with issues of abuse and neglect. It’s a truly bizarre premise, but the movie plays it completely straight – and yes, all of this actually happens in the film.

19. Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
Warner Bros. hilariously skewered itself in Space Jam: A New Legacy, portraying the studio as a cold, corporate entity obsessed with its own properties. However, the movie itself was a major disappointment – it made the original Space Jam look like a masterpiece. LeBron James wasn’t a bad lead actor – he performed about as well as Michael Jordan did in the first film – but almost everything else was just embarrassing. The movie seemed to miss the point of what makes the Looney Tunes, especially Bugs Bunny, so beloved, turning him into a surprisingly gloomy character. Instead of watching A New Legacy, I recommend revisiting some classic Looney Tunes shorts on HBO Max. You’ll get far more laughs from a single short than from the entire two-hour movie, and the animation is actually better.

18. Catwoman (2004)
In the movie Catwoman, Halle Berry plays Patience Phillips, who uncovers dangerous toxins in her beauty company’s products and is subsequently killed by her employers in a cover-up. However, she’s resurrected by cats, joining a long line of feline-inspired heroes. As Catwoman, Berry uses classic cat abilities – incredible agility, always landing on her feet, and a knack for stealing jewelry – to fight crime, though she occasionally causes trouble. The movie is visually decent for its time, coming from a director with a background in visual effects, but it’s notoriously poorly edited. A glaring example: the actors wear the same outfits for two consecutive days of supposedly separate events, revealing a rushed and careless post-production process.

17. Madame Web (2024)
“Madame Web” feels like an older, less polished Marvel movie, reminiscent of the days before Marvel Studios perfected the superhero formula. These earlier films often seemed hesitant about their comic book origins, and this one is no different. Even Dakota Johnson, who plays the lead, isn’t actually called Madame Web in the movie – she plays a character named Cassie Webb. She also doesn’t wear a traditional superhero costume for most of the film, adding to the sense that everyone involved was a bit uncomfortable with the material. It’s a strange and confusing movie at times, making even the often-criticized “The Amazing Spider-Man” look good in comparison. It makes you wonder what Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind the current Marvel successes, would think of it – that would be an interesting reaction to witness.

16. Planet of the Apes (2001)
Mark Wahlberg plays an astronaut who has a really rough time. He gets pulled into a strange purple cloud in space and ends up on a planet inhabited by… apes! After a long and awkward journey across a desert, filled with unconvincing fight scenes, he finally makes it back to Earth, only to discover it’s been taken over by apes as well! Director Tim Burton, known for his successful films in the 80s and 90s, unfortunately missed the mark with this one.

15. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
The title itself hints at the film’s biggest problem: it tries to do too much. Is it an X-Men movie, a Wolverine story, or an origin tale? It attempts all three, and the result is a mess. Director Gavin Hood might have made a decent film if he’d focused on just one aspect, but the movie was burdened from the start by trying to combine multiple X-Men and Wolverine storylines. Hugh Jackman’s character, Logan, even says, “We didn’t sign up for this,” which feels like the filmmakers acknowledging the movie’s flaws. Other lines, like “We’ve done enough!” and “Wake me when it’s over,” also seem to comment on how disappointing the film is.

14. Meet the Spartans (2008)
One of the most disappointing trends in recent movie history was the surge of poorly-made parody films that followed the success of the Scary Movie series. Many of these comedies were created by the same writers and directors, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, and relied on a very simple, and often crude, formula: re-creating scenes from popular movies – 300 was a frequent target in Meet the Spartans, alongside random jokes from films like Shrek, Spider-Man 3, and Happy Feet – and adding slapstick, particularly groin shots. These movies weren’t funny then, and now they feel incredibly dated, filled with references to 2000s celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton that no longer land. Seriously, avoid Meet the Spartans at all costs.

13. Marmaduke (2022)
I can’t recall ever seeing a more visually unappealing animated movie than Marmaduke, and I sincerely hope I never do. It feels like something made simply to move money around, or a quick project thrown together just to keep the rights from expiring. Surprisingly, despite the awful animation, the film boasts a talented voice cast including J.K. Simmons, David Koechner, and Pete Davidson. It’s baffling – did they not see the script or the characters? Were they generously compensated for their involvement? Whatever the reason, Marmaduke is just plain terrible. I wouldn’t even recommend it to the kids who used to tease me – and their bullying songs were actually more imaginative than anything in this movie.

12. Daddy Day Camp (2007)
It felt like almost everyone from the original Daddy Day Care didn’t want to return for the sequel. Eddie Murphy, Jeff Garlin, Steve Zahn, and Regina King were all replaced with Cuba Gooding Jr., Paul Rae, Josh McLerran, and Tamala Jones. Even the director of the first film, Steve Carr, wasn’t involved.
The first movie focused on Murphy and Garlin learning how to run a day care. The sequel moves the action to a camp, and with their experience, it should have been easy. But, as often happens with sequels, everything goes wrong – and the movie suffers as a result.

11. Elektra (2005)
Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe took off, things were pretty rough for Marvel fans. After the initial success of movies like X-Men and Spider-Man, studios started rushing out Marvel adaptations without the same attention to quality.
The low point was probably the movie Elektra. Jennifer Garner returned as the assassin, and the film portrayed her as obsessively cleaning up after herself to avoid leaving any trace of DNA, yet also incredibly careless, befriending her neighbors while on a mission – neighbors who, unbelievably, were her targets.
To make things even stranger, Elektra was brought back to life after dying in Daredevil and gained the power to see the future and even rewind time, essentially becoming immortal. Naturally, she used these god-like powers to… stab ninjas. Who wouldn’t, if they could travel through time?

10. Norbit (2007)
Eddie Murphy is known for entertaining audiences when he plays several characters in one movie, often with the help of impressive makeup. His 2007 film, Norbit, made nearly $160 million worldwide despite receiving negative reviews, considering it only cost $60 million to make.
However, that doesn’t make it a good movie. In Norbit, Murphy’s talent for transforming himself – along with Rick Baker’s fantastic makeup – is used to tell a frustrating story about a timid man who marries a controlling woman (both played by Murphy), who treats him terribly. Murphy’s portrayal of the mean and aggressive Rasputia is technically skillful, but relies on unkind stereotypes and constant jokes about her weight. He also plays Mr. Wong, a harsh Chinese character who runs an orphanage and speaks with a problematic, exaggerated accent. Ultimately, the film is just a downbeat experience.

9. The Emoji Movie (2017)
A good movie about smartphones and emojis could be made, but it would need to be much funnier and more critical than The Emoji Movie. Beyond a simple message of accepting others, the film feels exactly like what you’d expect from a tech company that profits from selling phones – basically, a long ad suggesting your phone is the key to popularity and romance. It’s not good.

8. Bulletproof Monk (2003)
I saw this movie over 20 years ago, and I was the only one in the theater. Everyone else was smart to stay away! By the end, I was so bored I was actually moving around, trying to find a better seat – but nothing helped. It was just a bad movie. Looking back, Bulletproof Monk might have the worst martial arts scenes Hollywood has ever produced. It’s not necessarily the director’s fault, though; it seems like Seann William Scott did a lot of his own stunts, while Chow Yun-fat didn’t. When the actor best known for playing Stifler is the one doing the most convincing action in your movie, that’s a major issue.

7. Artemis Fowl (2020)
When the COVID-19 pandemic started, Disney postponed most of its big 2020 movies. The one exception was Artemis Fowl, which went straight to Disney+ streaming. Looking back, that should have been a warning sign. The movie tries to cram the story of a ten-book series into just 90 minutes, making it confusing and difficult to watch. (I still can’t figure out how Josh Gad’s character went from burglar to ally with Artemis Fowl without a single word being exchanged!) It’s rare for a streaming movie you didn’t even pay extra for to feel like a waste of time, but Artemis Fowl managed to do just that.

6. Son of the Mask (2005)
Few movie sequels are as disappointing as one that leaves out its star. The original Mask was special because Jim Carrey’s energetic performance, powered by the magical mask, showcased his incredible impressions and unrestrained energy. Son of the Mask fails to capture that magic. Jamie Kennedy’s character rarely wears the mask—surprisingly, his dog wears it much more often—and when he does, he’s completely unconvincing, despite the film trying to justify it by making him a cartoonist. It even sounds like they tried to fake Carrey’s voice!
Believe it or not, a large chunk of the movie revolves around the dog being jealous of the new baby and intentionally using the mask to try and harm him. Thankfully, the baby is born with powers of his own.
Nothing can prepare you for the bizarre and unpleasant CGI of this baby attacking Jamie Kennedy. This movie should have been scrapped entirely, just like the mask is discarded at the end of the first film.

5. Alone in the Dark (2005)
Uwe Boll gained notoriety as a director by consistently making video game adaptations. He was able to fund these films through a German tax benefit, almost guaranteeing they’d make money – think of the characters from Mel Brooks’ The Producers, but focused on video games.
One of Boll’s worst films from the 2000s, Alone in the Dark, stars Tara Reid as an archaeologist and Christian Slater as a detective investigating the supernatural. It’s nearly impossible to follow, even with the opening title sequence – a 90-second crawl that actually adds to the confusion. Considering Alone in the Dark already ranks as the worst video game movie ever made, the fact that it isn’t at the very bottom of this list is quite a statement.

4. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023)
This low-budget horror film is a poorly made adaptation of the classic Winnie-the-Pooh stories, which are now in the public domain. It fails as both a slasher movie and a parody of children’s books. Ironically, it unintentionally makes a case against the public domain – suggesting that copyright protection might be useful in preventing truly terrible movies like this one from being made. Simply put, Blood and Honey is awful.

3. Dolittle (2020)
Remember the scene in Tim Burton’s Batman where the doctor botches Jack Napier’s surgery, leaving him with the Joker’s terrifying smile? The movie Dolittle feels a lot like that – a chaotic and confusing experience, as if it was haphazardly assembled from discarded footage. What likely began as a more grounded film was transformed into a bizarre mix of childish humor – think poop, farts, and itchy bottoms – talking animals, shaky special effects, and Robert Downey Jr. delivering an over-the-top performance that makes even Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow seem reserved.

2. The Master of Disguise (2002)
The idea behind The Master of Disguise was promising: a character who could imitate anyone seemed perfect for Dana Carvey, known for his impressive impersonations on Saturday Night Live. However, there’s a difference between doing impressions and truly disguising oneself. A skilled disguise artist would completely transform and become unrecognizable, which isn’t what Carvey does in this film.
It’s incredibly obvious that it’s Carvey, even when he’s supposedly disguised as characters like Al Pacino from Scarface or Robert Shaw from Jaws. Many scenes aren’t funny, but rather bizarre and awkward, like the one where he dresses up as a turtle-like creature. While the film is brief, clocking in at just 70 minutes, it feels much longer – those 70 minutes are strangely uncomfortable and ultimately, not funny.

1. Disaster Movie (2008)
The title Disaster Movie is a misnomer on both counts. The film parodies recent blockbusters like 10,000 B.C., Hancock, Jumper, Enchanted, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Beowulf, and The Love Guru, but it barely qualifies as a movie itself. It features few developed characters and a paper-thin plot, held together by a constant stream of awful celebrity impersonations – so bad, even the characters in the film point them out.
Honestly, it’s one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. By the time a man was fighting someone dressed in a poorly made Kung Fu Panda costume, I felt pity – for the actors involved, and especially for anyone who actually paid to watch it.
