The winners of the 2026 Oscars are in! The Academy Awards ceremony happened this past Sunday, bringing a busy awards season to a close. After weeks of guessing, we finally know who won in several hotly debated categories.
Michael B. Jordan was named Best Actor for playing two roles in Sinners, while Amy Madigan received the Best Supporting Actress award for her portrayal of the villain Aunt Gladys in Weapons. Sean Penn won Best Supporting Actor for his powerful performance in One Battle After Another, which was also crowned Best Picture of the night.
The 2026 Oscar winners showcased amazing talent, and several achieved historic milestones during the awards show. Here’s a look at every groundbreaking win from the night.
Cassandra Kulukundis Becomes The First Winner In The Achievement In Casting Category

The Academy Awards will be adding a new category in 2026 to recognize outstanding casting directors – the professionals who assemble the actors in a film. The first nominees for this award are Cassandra Kulukundis for One Battle After Another, Nina Gold for Hamnet, Jennifer Venditti for Marty Supreme, Gabriel Domingues for The Secret Agent, and Francine Maisler for Sinners.
Kulukundis won the award, marking the first time anyone has received it in this category. She’s a long-time creative partner of director Paul Thomas Anderson, and has contributed to several of his films, like Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Licorice Pizza.
As a film buff, I wasn’t surprised to hear she received an award! Four actors from “One Battle After Another” were up for Oscars, and Sean Penn actually took home the win. It’s amazing to see her work on so many critically acclaimed films – she also contributed to the stunning visuals in movies like “The Brutalist” and “Her,” both Oscar winners themselves.
Jessie Buckley was the first-ever Irish actor to win Best Actress
Everyone expected Jessie Buckley to win Best Actress at the Oscars for her performance as Agnes in Hamnet. She’d already received the same award at all the major pre-Oscar ceremonies, like the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Critics Choice Awards, making her the overwhelming favorite.
Olivia Colman’s performance in Hamnet was exceptional, and her Academy Award win caps off a hugely successful awards season. She also made history as the first Irish actress to win Best Actress. Saoirse Ronan and Ruth Negga are other Irish women who have been nominated for the award in the past.
Buckley’s victory follows Cillian Murphy’s historic win as the first actor born in Ireland to receive the Best Actor award for his role in Oppenheimer. While Daniel Day-Lewis, a three-time Best Actor winner, is an Irish citizen, he was born in England.
Golden Became The First K-Pop Song To Win Best Original Song
The movie KPop Demon Hunters was a huge success, making waves in both film and music. While praised for its stunning animation and compelling storyline, it really captured audiences with its memorable soundtrack, especially the song “Golden.” “Golden” was a major hit in 2025, topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart for several weeks.
The song took home the Best Original Song Oscar in 2026, as many expected. However, “I Lied to You” from the movie Sinners was a strong contender and could have been a surprise winner. The song was performed live by HUNTR/X, the fictional band featured in the film. With KPop Demon Hunters 2 coming soon, the franchise might win even more Oscars in the years to come.
Norway Won Its First Best International Feature Film Oscar For Sentimental Value
The film Sentimental Value received nine nominations at the 2026 Academy Awards. These included major categories like Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, and Best Director, as well as nominations for its screenplay, film editing, and lead actors. Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas were both nominated for Best Supporting Actress for their performances.
The film received the Best International Feature Film award, a first-time win for Norway in this category. It beat out films from France (It Was Just an Accident), Tunisia (The Voice of Hind Rajab), Spain (Sirat), and Brazil (The Secret Agent, which was also nominated for Best Picture). This was director Joachim Trier’s second nomination in the category, following his previous nomination for The Worst Person in the World.
Autumn Durald Arkapaw Was The First woman To Win Best Cinematography
The film Sinners received a remarkable 16 nominations at the recent Oscars and won several awards, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Score, and Best Actor. Autumn Durald Arkapaw also made history by winning Best Cinematography for her work on the film.
Arkapaw made history as the first woman and first Black person to win this award. The Guardian reports she’s only the fourth woman ever nominated, and the first woman of color. She previously collaborated with director Ryan Coogler on the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
She won in a competitive category that featured several acclaimed books and films, including One Battle After Another, Train Dreams, Marty Supreme, and Frankenstein. Although One Battle After Another won the Best Picture Oscar, Sinners was also a big success, and Arkapaw’s victory was particularly noteworthy.
