The studio has had great success turning its animated films into live-action remakes, but not every project comes to fruition. For example, a live-action version of the 1973 classic was recently cancelled. This highlights that while films like The Lion King and Aladdin have been successful, many similar projects are abandoned during development or never see the light of day.
Disney has often announced plans to remake or expand on its classic animated films and fairy tales with live-action projects, but many of these ideas never actually made it to production. Here’s a look at the live-action remakes Disney canceled before filming began.
Robin Hood
In 2020, Disney announced plans for a live-action and computer-animated remake of Robin Hood as a musical for their Disney+ streaming service. Carlos López Estrada was set to direct, with Kari Granlund writing the script and Justin Springer producing. While it seemed like a logical next step for Disney’s strategy of revisiting classic films, the project ultimately stalled and wasn’t developed further.
In March 2026, Estrada announced on Reddit that the film project was cancelled. He expressed disappointment, explaining that the team had created something truly unique, particularly with its music.
The Aristocats
Disney initially planned a live-action or hybrid remake of The Aristocats in 2023, and things gained traction when they brought on Questlove to direct, produce, and handle the music. Will Gluck and Keith Bunin were writing the script. It seemed like a unique remake idea, considering the original’s focus on music. However, the project lost steam, and Questlove announced in 2025 that Disney had cancelled it due to several changes in leadership. The studio later confirmed the project was no longer in development.
The Sword in the Stone
Disney began developing this project in 2015, hiring Bryan Cogman, a writer from Game of Thrones, to write the script. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo later signed on to direct, and it was initially planned for streaming on Disney+ instead of in theaters. Although Disney still saw potential in the idea, the project stalled and remained untouched for several years. In 2024, Fresnadillo confirmed the studio had paused development, with no clear future plans. While not officially canceled, the movie is currently on hold indefinitely.
Bambi
A photorealistic computer-generated remake of Bambi, similar in style to The Lion King and The Jungle Book, was announced in 2020. Writers Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer were brought on board, and Sarah Polley was initially slated to direct. The project generated excitement due to Bambi‘s status as a deeply emotional Disney classic, but news about its development gradually stopped. By early 2026, Robertson-Dworet revealed she hadn’t received any updates on the film in five years, indicating it was likely abandoned – still officially uncancelled, but no longer actively being pursued.
Rose Red
Before Disney decided to remake stories directly, they considered a spin-off called Rose Red, focusing on Snow White’s sister from the original fairy tale. The plan was for Rose Red and the dwarfs to go on an adventure to wake Snow White from her poisoned sleep. Unlike a simple remake, this story would have taken a fresh approach to the fairy tale, which was unusual even for Disney at the time. Brie Larson was potentially considered for the lead role, but the project didn’t move forward, and by the early 2020s, it was generally believed to have been cancelled.
Aladdin Prequel
Long before Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin became a success, Disney was working on a live-action movie called Genies. According to The Hollywood Reporter in 2015, this film would have been a prequel exploring the history of the Genie, explaining how he became trapped in the lamp. It was even intended to potentially launch a series of live-action Aladdin films. However, the project was canceled when Disney decided to pursue a different direction for Aladdin. There are also reports of a separate movie in development focusing on Prince Anders, the comedic character from the 2019 Aladdin remake, played by Billy Magnussen.
