HBO isn’t saying goodbye to Angus Cloud’s Euphoria character, Fez, just yet.
The third season of the show began on Sunday, and fans quickly noticed the absence of Fez, especially after the heartbreaking loss of Angus Cloud almost three years prior.
The actor passed away in July 2023 at the age of 25. Authorities later determined his death was accidental, caused by an overdose.
The new season begins five years after the events of the previous finale, revealing what happened after a character’s death, which occurred off-screen.
The previously high school-age characters are on different paths in their early adulthood.
In one scene, Rue (Zendaya) spoke with Lexi (Maude Apatow) about trying to reach Fez. She learned that Fez is currently serving a long prison sentence.
Rue tells Lexi she really ought to call Fez, and Lexi admits she knows, but just hasn’t had the time.
Rue shares that Fez has often expressed how much he misses Lexi, but Lexi brushes it off, saying she’s busy.
Rue told me to just call him, saying he wasn’t going anywhere – he’s in prison for thirty years.
The second season ended with a dramatic and suspenseful scene where it appeared Fez was being taken into custody.
At the Los Angeles premiere this week, creator Sam Levinson told Variety that many scenes involve characters speaking to him over the phone.
He explained that if he couldn’t save the person in real life, he hoped to be able to preserve their memory and keep them ‘alive’ within the show, which he had complete control over.
It was all meant as a tribute to him, and I’m really excited for you to watch the final episodes. I think he’d find his storyline hilarious and would absolutely love it.
Eric Dane, an actor known for his work on the show Grey’s Anatomy, sadly passed away in February at the age of 53. He died from respiratory failure caused by ALS, a serious disease that affects the nervous system.
Dane had filmed all of his scenes prior to his death and will appear posthumously in season three.
Levinson honored the deceased actors with a five-minute speech at the premiere.
According to a video from Deadline, Levinson explained that several issues caused the gap between seasons two and three.
He emphasized that the most challenging part was finding a respectful way to honor those who had died.
It was really difficult when Angus passed away,” he said. “I loved him very much and did everything I could to help him with his addiction. Sadly, he was one of 73,000 Americans who died from a fentanyl overdose in 2023.
He reflected on a year of significant learning, ultimately realizing that it’s the awareness of death that truly makes life meaningful.
Don’t take life for granted. It’s something amazing, a precious gift, and a truly deep blessing that deserves our respect.
He also mentioned how much he values life and explained that he wanted to reflect this feeling in the third season as a tribute to the actors who had passed away.
I want to create a story that explores what it means to be human—to have the ability to make your own choices, but also to face the results of those decisions.
Levinson explained that this season of the show was largely dedicated to remembering Angus and considering the bigger questions about life’s purpose. Ultimately, he believes the most important takeaway is being thankful.
It’s important to appreciate both the good and the bad in life – the little joys, the hardships, and everything in between. This idea became the central theme.
Levinson dedicated the show’s third and final season to Cloud, Dane, and Kevin Turen, the executive producer who passed away in 2023.
