Consensys, a leading Ethereum software company, has confirmed that no user data or funds were affected despite an unauthorized individual with ties to North Korea briefly accessing some of the underlying code for their widely-used Web3 wallet, MetaMask.
Earlier this year, a security incident occurred involving someone using the name “Tyler Knapp” (with the GitHub username *imyugioh*). This person wasn’t a direct employee of Consensys, but rather a consultant hired through another company.
From March 9th to early April 2026, a developer worked directly on the main code for MetaMask, focusing on improving how users add and withdraw traditional money (like USD) from the wallet.

When Consensys discovered the threat, they acted quickly and decisively. They immediately stopped all new product launches, blocked the contractor from their systems, and began a thorough internal security review. They have also reported the incident to the authorities.
Correcting misinformation
Consensys issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) to clarify inaccurate information spreading online regarding the recent security breach.
Earlier this year, we discovered someone working with us through a consulting firm posed a security risk. We acted quickly to stop the threat by cutting off their access, thoroughly investigating the situation, and alerting the authorities.
To calm users’ concerns, Consensys shared the findings of its internal review, which showed the security threat was stopped before it caused any problems.
The firm’s investigation found no evidence of harmful software being used, and customer information, funds, and safety were all secure.
