“Emotional” first trailer for The Capture star’s “compelling” drama lands as release date revealed

The BBC has shared a first look at its new six-part drama, Babies, featuring Paapa Essiedu and Siobhán Cullen. The trailer, available to watch now, hints at what the BBC calls a moving and compelling love story.

This series centers on Lisa and Stephen, a couple in their thirties, and their emotional journey after experiencing the loss of a pregnancy. It depicts the heartbreak and challenges they face as they grapple with a miscarriage and the shattering of their dream to have a child.

The trailer reveals a story that is deeply personal, honest, and surprisingly moving. It beautifully blends sadness with moments of both laughter and genuine connection.

Essiedu is well-known for his work on shows like Black Mirror, The Lazarus Project, I May Destroy You, and most recently, The Capture. Cullen has been in series including Bodkin, The Dry, and Obituary.

Charlotte Riley (known from The Peripheral and Press) and Jack Bannon (Pennyworth, Pulse) join the cast as Amanda and Dave, a new couple figuring out if they’re a good match. As their relationship develops, it starts to reveal hidden tensions in the long-time friendship between Stephen and Dave, adding more emotional depth to the story.

What to Read Next

Okay, so I just started watching this new show called Babies, and it’s by Stefan Golaszewski – the guy who did Mum and Marriage. He wrote and directed the whole thing himself, which is pretty cool. I’ve heard amazing things about his other work, and this feels the same – really focused on the characters and their emotions. It’s shaping up to be another great one, honestly.

I was so excited when the series was announced back in December! The creator, Stefan Golaszewski, put out a statement saying how amazing Paapa, Siobhán, Jack, and Charlotte are as actors. He really highlighted their ability to bring warmth, nuance, and genuine emotion to what sounds like a really important and untold story. I’m already anticipating some fantastic performances!

Ruth Kenley-Letts, from Snowed-In Productions (the team behind Babies), praised the emotional depth of Stefan’s writing. She expressed her enthusiasm for helping to share his moving story of love and hope with audiences.

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, praised the show Babies, saying it shares the heartfelt, realistic, and emotionally resonant qualities audiences love in Stefan Golaszewski’s work, and that it explores a rarely seen stage in couples’ lives.

The entire series of Babies will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer starting at 6am on March 30th. You can also watch it on BBC One beginning at 9pm that same day.
