I was so excited to finally catch Emily on BBC Two last night! It came out right around the time Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation was released, and now it’s up on BBC iPlayer so anyone can watch it. I’m really looking forward to seeing it!
This 2022 film, directed by Frances O’Connor in her first feature film, offers a dramatized look at the life of Emily Brontë and the experiences that inspired her to write the classic novel, Wuthering Heights.
The film features a strong cast including Emma Mackey, known from Sex Education, Fionn Whitehead from Great Expectations, Oliver Jackson-Cohen of The Haunting of Hill House, Alexandra Dowling who starred in Sweetpea, Gemma Jones famous for Bridget Jones, and Adrian Dunbar from Line of Duty.
What to Read Next
As is typical with films on iPlayer, this one is only available for a limited time.
Currently, Emily will only be available for streaming for the next 29 days, and isn’t included with any other subscription services.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a very impressive 87% positive score from 134 critic reviews.
In a review for Digital Spy, the film Emily was praised as a captivating first feature from director Francis O’Connor. The review highlighted Emma Mackey’s powerful performance, noting how she convincingly portrayed Emily’s passion and strength. The chemistry between Mackey and Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who played William, was also described as particularly strong and engaging.
According to Tilt magazine, the film beautifully captures the emotional heart of the original story – the struggles, heartbreaks, and love stories that make the classic tale so beloved.
In this impressive first book, O’Connor argues that the emotional impact of the writing is more important than simply recounting the events themselves.

A new movie version of Wuthering Heights, featuring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, will be released this Friday.
The adaptation has split fans, with many believing it doesn’t quite capture the spirit of the original book. However, initial reviews from critics have been positive, applauding its bold and ambitious style.
Emily can be streamed now on BBC iPlayer.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a vibrant, full-color 100-page magazine celebrating Taylor Swift, is now available! You can purchase it at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
