Emerald Fennell In Talks To Direct Basic Instinct Reboot After Wuthering Heights Success

Emerald Fennell could be lining up her next movie, and it’s the iconic Basic Instinct.

When Basic Instinct came out in 1992, it was a major hit, becoming one of the year’s top-grossing films with over $117 million in worldwide box office revenue (equivalent to $352 million today). While reviews were mixed – largely due to its provocative and suspenseful nature, and controversial themes – the film has since gained a dedicated following and helped make Sharon Stone a star.

According to screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, Emerald Fennell is in talks to direct a reboot of Basic Instinct. This comes after her successful adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Eszterhas, who previously worked on both the original 1992 Basic Instinct and Showgirls, believes Fennell—known for films like Saltburn and Promising Young Woman—is an ideal fit for the project.

The team is in talks with Emerald Fennell, a talented British director known for films like Promising Young Woman and her adaptation of Wuthering Heights. She brings a bold and unique vision to her work, isn’t afraid to tackle challenging themes, and I’m really excited about the possibility of her directing the project. Hopefully, we can reach an agreement.

A sequel, Basic Instinct 2, came out in 2006 but wasn’t successful, earning only $5.9 million in theaters. Despite this, Amazon MGM Studios is said to have spent $2 million to acquire the rights to create a new version of the film.

Many fans weren’t excited about a potential reboot of Basic Instinct, and the film’s star, Sharon Stone, was particularly vocal in her disapproval of writer Joe Eszterhas’ plans. In an interview with The Guardian, Stone expressed her disappointment and bluntly stated that a reboot won’t happen, adding that Eszterhas lacks the writing ability to pull it off.

As a big movie fan, I saw the actress talking on the Today Show and her words were pretty blunt. She basically said if the reboot goes anything like the original film she was in, she doesn’t understand why anyone would attempt it – but if they do, she wishes them luck…a very colorful ‘good luck’ at that! Apparently, the writer, Eszterhas, had hoped to get her involved again, but she’s clearly turned down the offer. He’s not letting the criticism about returning to this kind of thriller bother him, though.

Some people have asked why an 80-year-old is writing a steamy thriller. To them, I say those who think I’ve lost my creative touch are wrong and unfairly judging me because of my age. I have a playful, imaginative side – I call him my ‘Twisted Little Man’ – and he’s the one driving this story. He’s eternally 29, full of energy, and thrilled to be writing something exciting and passionate for the audience. That makes me incredibly pleased.

No release date has been revealed yet for the Basic Instinct reboot.
