Elon Musk’s Neuralink seeks patients globally to try its brain chips
Want to Control Computers with Your Mind? Elon Musk Has a Chip for That! 🧠💻
So, Elon Musk, the guy who brought us electric cars and a questionable Twitter feed, is now on a quest to find brave souls willing to test out his latest brain chip invention. Yes, you heard that right! Neuralink is looking for patients worldwide to try out a device that lets you control a computer with your thoughts. Because who needs a mouse when you have a brain? 🤯
They’re specifically hunting for people with quadriplegia—those who can’t use their arms or legs. It’s like a superhero audition, but instead of capes, you get brain implants! Neuralink made this announcement on April 2nd on X, the social media platform that’s basically Musk’s playground.
As of January, three lucky individuals have already received the implant. All are quadriplegic and are part of a clinical trial called the Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface, or PRIME study. Sounds fancy, right? It’s like the Ivy League of brain chips! 🎓
Neuralink isn’t the only player in the brain-computer interface game. There are other companies and academic institutions trying to figure out how to turn our thoughts into digital commands. Some of these devices look like tiny wires, while others resemble hats. Yes, hats! Because nothing says “I’m controlling a computer with my mind” like a stylish accessory. 🧢
According to Neuralink’s website, their PRIME study will take about six years. They’re looking for quadriplegics with spinal cord injuries or ALS to help them turn thoughts into computer commands. Talk about a brainy endeavor!
And let’s not forget, Musk is also the mastermind behind Tesla and has dabbled in government cost-cutting. He claims he wants Neuralink to do more than just let us operate computers with our minds; he wants to give us “superpowers.” Because who wouldn’t want to be a superhero in their living room? 🦸♂️
First Neuralink Patient Reports No Side Effects After a Year
Meet Noland Arbaugh, Neuralink’s first patient, who took to X on March 28 to share that he’s had “no negative side effects, neither physically nor psychologically” after a year with his brain implant. Lucky guy! 🎉
Arbaugh, who is quadriplegic, showed off his brain chip by controlling a computer cursor to play chess and surf the web. I mean, who needs a personal assistant when you have a brain chip, right?
He’s now using his brain chip “for all sorts of things” and estimates he’s using it for over 10 hours a day. That’s some serious screen time! 📱
He mentioned that researchers are working on controlling a wheelchair with the implant, but he’s not ready to take that leap. “I think it benefits everyone if I don’t lose control and drive into traffic,” he quipped. Wise words, Noland!
Thanks to Neuralink, Arbaugh has found work as a traveling keynote speaker, which he credits to the implant that helps him write, research, and communicate online. Talk about a glow-up! ✨
“I can’t tell you how much hope and purpose this technology has provided me,” he said. “It’s only a matter of time before the implant is in dozens, then hundreds, then thousands of people.” So, get ready world, the brain chip revolution is coming! 🚀
