Players diving into the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC are already worried, and one particular boss fight is being called the most frustrating kind of challenge found in these types of difficult action games.
Wow, Sony’s State of Play Japan ended with a huge reveal for Nightreign! As a fan, I’m so excited to hear FromSoftware is adding a whole new area to the game, plus two new classes to play as and two new bosses to fight! The base game already felt like a celebration of everything great about FromSoftware’s past games, bringing back some classic boss fights. But this new DLC, The Forsaken Hollows, is going to be intense – they’re bringing back those crazy multi-man melee battles, which were some of the hardest and most memorable fights from their previous games!
A new boss fight in the downloadable content features seven opponents wielding spears, bringing back a frustratingly familiar challenge from the Souls games: fighting multiple enemies at once. While some multi-boss fights, like Ornstein and Smough, are memorable classics, others, such as the Skeleton Lords, are notoriously difficult. The Deacons of the Deep fight is an exception, often remembered for its fantastic music.
Players on the Nightreign subreddit are expressing mixed feelings about an upcoming encounter with seven enemies. One fan shared a screenshot, predicting the fight will be either amazing or terrible – there’s no middle ground. Others speculate its success hinges on whether it’s a chaotic free-for-all where all seven enemies attack simultaneously, or a more strategic fight requiring precise timing and careful play.
One player pointed out that FromSoftware often struggles with boss fights involving multiple enemies. Another countered that these fights work well when the multiple enemies are a central part of the design, rather than just two enemies thrown into the same space. Considering the Godskin Duo boss, I tend to agree with that point.
Some fans believe the upcoming boss fight won’t involve battling multiple enemies, but rather a single boss who uses cloning abilities. Regardless, it’s almost certain players will complain about this fight as soon as they start playing it.
