Elden Ring Nightreign’s Switch 2 Absence: A Blessing in Disguise?

It appears that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 may prove to be advantageous for Nintendo in terms of third-party games, as the original Switch, similar to its predecessors Wii and Wii U, missed out on several popular AAA games from the last and current console generations. Games such as Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, and Red Dead Redemption 2 were not released for the Switch, along with hits like GTA 5 which remained unavailable on Nintendo’s hybrid console.

In the approaching months and years, there’s a strong possibility that the Switch 2 will see some big-name games being transferred over, as per Nintendo’s confirmation. Games like Elden Ring are definitely exciting news for Switch fans, but the omission of other anticipated releases, such as Elden Ring Nightreign, is a bit bewildering. After all, if the Switch 2 can handle games like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077, it should be able to manage Nightreign without any issues. Interestingly, the Switch 2 will also get an exclusive PvPvE game from FromSoftware called The Duskbloods. It might seem odd that Nintendo is releasing The Duskbloods but not Nightreign, but upon closer inspection, it starts to make sense. However, whether this strategy benefits consumers remains to be seen.

The Pros and Cons of Elden Ring Nightreign Skipping the Switch 2

Switch 2 Loyalists Will Miss Out On 2025’s Flagship FromSoftware Release

For most dedicated gamers who opt for Nintendo as their primary gaming platform, they might find themselves in a frustrating situation upon discovering that they won’t be able to play the cooperative spin-off game “Elden Ring Nightreign“. While it’s true that “Elden Ring” will eventually reach Nintendo fans, the latest, teamwork-focused version of this game will remain unavailable for them. Essentially, while Switch 2 owners will still lag behind other gamers in terms of playing FromSoftware games, they’ll be catching up on that a bit less than before.

It’s quite possible that Nintendo is making this decision because they want to protect the success of The Duskbloods from potential competition posed by Elden Ring Nightreign. As both games are FromSoftware action titles with a strong emphasis on cooperative gameplay, they are likely to attract similar audiences. Given the significant investment made in publishing The Duskbloods exclusively for Nintendo’s next console, it seems strategic to minimize potential sales cannibalization by holding off on releasing another high-profile game in the same genre.

It’s possible that Nightreign won’t arrive on the Switch 2 until some time in the future, as The Duskbloods are set to debut in 2026. However, this assumption depends on the accuracy of the given theory.

The Duskbloods Will Be Far More Active Without Nightreign’s Interference

The success or downfall of multiplayer games largely depends on the number of players involved, making it a major factor in why many don’t last: when there aren’t enough players for interaction, the game’s primary features become less accessible. This rule applies equally to ‘Nightreign’ and ‘The Duskbloods’, which, while offering single-player options, seem to emphasize their cooperative aspects. These elements appear to differentiate them from earlier games developed by FromSoftware.

Given these circumstances, it might prove beneficial for The Duskbloods if Nightreign were not attracting its players away. Players of The Duskbloods can feel secure knowing they’ll always find plenty of opponents or allies within the game since the community will likely be larger under these conditions. However, Elden Ring Nightreign might be inferior to The Duskbloods, which would make this argument irrelevant, but it could also be superior. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and observe to determine the truth.
