Following the largest update for Elden Ring titled Nightreign, developers FromSoftware and publishers Bandai Namco unveiled a fresh trailer showcasing the upcoming Deep of Night gameplay expansion. This expansion promises tougher trials, additional equipment, and sprawling narratives spanning multiple days.
The intense, challenging expansion called “Deep of Night” is making its way to Elden Ring: Nightreign on September 10 at 6:30pm Pacific Time, 9:30pm Eastern Time, or 2:30am British Time (September 11). In this mode, players will confront wave upon wave of powerful bosses and upgraded adversaries as they journey deeper into the night. The culmination of this journey takes place at Depth 4, which serves as a climax and then offers an “endless battle for those craving more action and excitement.
“We encourage you to try and see if you can surpass Depth 3,” Bandai previously teased.
Today’s trailer delves further into intricate details. The Deep of Night modification significantly alters the usual gameplay cycle by introducing an additional level of equipment, unique weapon enhancements, and three additional slots for relics, each with distinctive extra attributes.
Depth Relics” become activated during the hours of midnight, and with an additional three available slots, bringing the total to six, they won’t disrupt your typical game setup.
These artifacts have the potential to introduce fresh, potent benefits, but also potential drawbacks to offset them. Essentially, each roll carries the possibility of a trade-off, so it’s crucial to consider the pros and cons carefully when planning your character’s development.
Here are some of the new negative relic effects shown in the trailer:
- Reduced Vigor and Arcane
- Reduced Dexterity and Faith
- Reduced Intelligence and Dexterity
- Taking damage causes Madness buildup
- Taking damage causes Poison buildup
- Taking damage causes Blood Loss buildup
- Reduce damage negation for flask usages
- Lower attack when below max HP
- Poison buildup when below max HP
- Rot buildup when below max HP
- Near death reduces max HP
In certain weapons, you might find more than one attribute – some beneficial, others detrimental. In the preview clips, there appears to be a pattern where negative attributes penalize you when your health is not at its maximum, but there’s a wider range of effects beyond that. It looks like it’s possible for a single weapon to have multiple positive attributes as well.
As an enthusiast, I’ve come across some exceptional weapons, not just any ordinary ones, but Red-grade ones. These bad boys require the same wielder level as Purple-rarity weapons. What sets them apart are their exclusive bonuses that truly make a difference in the game. For instance, I’ve encountered a Jar Cannon that unleashes lightning bolts on well-aimed shots, and a Blade of Calling that detonates Holy shockwaves when used with charged attacks. Pretty cool, right?
In this mode, regular foes become more powerful, but that’s not all – ominous, powerfully enhanced versions of them will also emerge. Shockingly, such as the red-tinted Bell Bearing Hunter, a formidable enemy from Nightreign who is so tough and dangerous that many players steer clear of it altogether, even in normal difficulty, will be part of this group. As you’d guess, these supercharged versions will drop special red weapons. We’re ready for the red-eyed, red-tinged BBH.
In the heart of the night, the identity of the Nightlord remains hidden until the fight ensues, and alterations in the Roundtable Hold due to Shifting Earth won’t be depicted during this preview.
“It is advisable to prepare relic presets in advance to be ready for each Nightlord fight.”
As you delve further into the depths, the opposition grows tougher. You’ll encounter various modifications too, such as one that cloaks significant locations on your map and another that entirely obscures the target Nightlord. To make matters more challenging, Everdark Nightlords may pop up at random.
With all the preliminary Nightlord bosses now sporting Everdark versions, Deep of Night seems to be the next escalation in the Nightreign weaponry competition, serving as a tantalizing teaser until that DLC arrives. The inclusion of a genuine endless mode suggests FromSoftware is dishing out a challenge, effectively saying, “Alright, fanatics, have at it.” And as someone who was starting to tire of Nightreign, I must admit, the prospect has me eager and reinvigorated once more.
