Elden Ring Nightreign’s Death Penalty is BRUTAL! You’ll Rage Quit!
The challenge in FromSoftware games is no laughing matter, and Elden Ring Nightreign is looking to carry on this legacy in an even more demanding fashion. Their previous game, Elden Ring, suffered the same fate, and its DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, took it a step further by featuring the hardest boss in a Soulsborne game with Promised Consort Radahn. The difficulty was so intense that he required significant toning down.
If you believed that Elden Ring couldn’t become any more challenging, think again! FromSoftware is certainly not shying away from difficulty with Elden Ring Nightreign. The game’s death penalty could very well be the most severe punishment ever encountered in a Soulsborne title.
Each death will lower your level in Elden Ring Nightreign
It’s well-known that Elden Ring presented quite a challenge, despite being the most accessible entry in the Soulsborne series. Yet, FromSoftware didn’t simplify things for us. In fact, they followed through on their tradition – if you lose a fight against a boss in Elden Ring Nightreign, you’ll lose some of the levels you’ve worked hard to earn.
In each Soulsborne game, a common feature is the consequence of death: you forfeit all earned items like runes or souls and are sent back to your last safe spot, either a site of grace or bonfire. Upon reappearance, you have the opportunity to regain them, but if you pass away again without recovering them, those items are gone for good.
In the game Elden Ring Nightreign, that particular aspect remains unchanged, yet it becomes significantly more challenging. When you’re knocked down, you’ll find yourself in a Near-Death state, where your movement speed is slower than a snail’s and you must crawl aimlessly until your teammates manage to revive you with a single swift strike.
Should they not complete the task within the given deadline, dire consequences will ensue: you’ll perish, and all penalties will be enacted in full. Not only will your runes be forfeited upon such an occurrence, but each time you are slain thereafter, you’ll lose a level until you reach level 1. Upon respawning, you’ll reappear at a random spot nearby where you were vanquished.
The high maximum level of 15 in the game complicates things even further, and to make it worse, any adversary close to your fallen runes might snatch them away. However, you can undoubtedly reclaim them once you’ve defeated those opponents.
FromSoftware aims to create a game that will challenge players emotionally, making them struggle and feel frustrated at times, but ultimately providing an experience that is fulfilling and gratifying. The upcoming title, Elden Ring Nightreign, being somewhat innovative within the Soulslike genre, inevitably deviates from traditional patterns in its design.
Night is no time to die in Elden Ring Nightreign

If you’re battling a boss during daytime, you can perish multiple times without much consequence, apart from the usual setbacks, as you will respawn at a nearby random spot. Conversely, if you fall in battle at night, you’ll be incapacitated until your fellow adventurers, who shine like knights in armor, rescue and revive you, thus preserving the ongoing quest.
To put it simply, it’s crucial that when you get knocked out in a fight, especially against a night boss, a teammate should be close by to resurrect you and let you carry on with the battle. This applies during the day as well, but since the revival window is very brief, they should hurry to your location.
An additional point to consider is minimizing frequent knockouts since the longer you’re knocked out, the more time your friends need to revive you. The blue gauges above your head when you’re downed show how much time remains before you encounter Fia – in other words, before you die.
Before you decide to buy the game and become a Nightfarer, consider the fierce frustration and untamed wrath that may seize you as you meet your in-game demise. After all, politeness is important, or perhaps it’s the challenge of overcoming death that appeals to you. You’ll find out soon enough.
Elden Ring Nightreign launches on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC on May 30, 2025.
