Elden Ring Nightreign Will Likely Add Two-Player Co-Op Post-Launch

Although stemming from Elden Ring, FromSoftware’s next venture, Elden Ring Nightreign, might not resonate with every fan of the original RPG. Unlike its predecessor, this upcoming action game veers away from a solitary, narrative-driven experience. Instead, it leans towards cooperative PvE gameplay, bearing resemblance to titles like Deep Rock Galactic or Helldivers 2. Elden Ring Nightreign is set in a procedurally generated version of the first open-world area of Elden Ring, Limgrave, where players must conquer an array of bosses throughout three game days. Though it can be played individually, the game has been tailored for teams of three.

Despite Elden Ring Nightreign being set to release later this month, the excitement surrounding it appears to be somewhat lower than typical for a FromSoftware title. Given the unique nature of Nightreign compared to other FromSoftware games, this is understandable. However, there are several factors contributing to some fans’ waning interest in Elden Ring Nightreign. One significant factor could be the lack of a popular feature that many have been requesting: two-player cooperative play.

FromSoftware Should Add Two-Player Co-Op to Elden Ring Nightreign Shortly After Its Release

Elden Ring Nightreign Will Not Be Playable With Only Two Players, At Least at Launch

Despite the fact that Elden Ring Nightreign supports both single and three-player modes, it does not offer a two-player co-op experience. This revelation was made by FromSoftware in December 2024, shortly after they unveiled Nightreign at The Game Awards 2024. In an interview with IGN, the game’s director, Junya Ishizaki, explained that the lack of two-player co-op wasn’t due to design choices but rather balancing challenges. Ishizaki stated that a three-player setup was considered ideal for Nightreign as it prevented the game from feeling overly overwhelming or crowded.

Contrary to initial beliefs that FromSoftware would hold firm on their decision, there are signs suggesting they might reconsider the absence of two-player co-op in Elden Ring Nightreign. During an interview with UnGeek from the Philippines, Junya Ishizaki hinted at the possibility of this feature being implemented. Essentially, he stated that the team is considering adding the requested dual player mode to the game, but it’s not currently included in the final version at launch. This implies that while two-player co-op may not be available right away, there’s a chance it could be added as an update later on.

FromSoft’s Plans to Support Elden Ring Nightreign Post-Launch Spark Hope for Two-Player Co-Op

FromSoftware isn’t planning to make Elden Ring Nightreign an ongoing live service game like Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone. Instead, they have plans to support the game after its release. While they haven’t shared a detailed content roadmap yet, they have given some hints about what players can anticipate in the months following the game’s launch. In the trailer’s finale, FromSoftware confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will receive paid DLC towards the end of 2025, offering new playable characters and bosses.

While I’m thrilled about the upcoming paid expansion for Elden Ring Nightreign later this year, it would make my fan-heart sing even more if FromSoftware considered adding two-player co-op to the game in 2025. You see, many Elden Ring fans might not get the full experience at launch if they only have one friend to play with. The three-player co-op restriction for Elden Ring Nightreign could potentially dampen the overall player count. If FromSoftware manages to seamlessly incorporate two-player co-op into Elden Ring Nightreign without compromising the game’s balance and difficulty, I believe it would be a wise move to roll out this feature as quickly as possible for the benefit of all Elden Ring enthusiasts.
