Elden Ring Nightreign Recluse Class Guide And Combos
Elden Ring‘s Nightreign’s Recluse offers a fresh perspective on FromSoft’s magic-focused builds. This character is an independent spellcaster who can regenerate FP without the need for items, and the spells she chooses determine extra skills at her disposal. However, there’s an extra level of difficulty with her Magic Potion blend that heavily relies on random drops from items, meaning that despite careful planning and skill, you may not be able to utilize all aspects of her kit in every adventure due to luck-based restrictions.

Recluse abilities and starting armaments
The equipment set of the Solitary Mage is predictably centered on magic and harnessing diverse elemental energies for casting potent spells. The Magic Potion is the key component in this mage’s abilities, as it not only rejuvenates her magical energy but also grants access to a wide array of offensive and supportive spells, ranging from fiery eruptions to protective auras that boost everyone’s maximum health points.
Magic Cocktail and Elemental Defense
- This is the Recluse’s standard art. Use it when an elemental stain is present to absorb that element and recover FP. The Recluse stores three elemental stains, and when she uses Magic Cocktail with three stains, she casts a new spell that changes depending on the stored elements used. Magic Cocktail has no cooldown timer, and you need to use it regularly to restore the Recluse’s FP so she can keep casting spells.
Soulblood Song
- Soulblood Song is the Recluse’s ultimate art. She attaches blood sigils to all nearby foes and deals magic damage to them. Allies–including the Recluse–who attack enemies with blood sigils will restore their HP and FP by a small amount with each attack.
Magic dodge
- This isn’t a named ability, but the Recluse’s dodge has a slightly longer window of evasion compared to the standard dodge the other Nightfarers get.
Besides mastering its combos, what makes Magic Cocktail stand out is the ability of the Recluse to soak up elemental residues from sources other than her own spells. For instance, if a teammate wields a flaming bow and attacks an enemy with it, this will generate a fire residue that the Recluse can absorb.
On her journey, the Solitary One sets out equipped with just one tool, her personal staff known as the Staff of the Recluse. This simple yet potent sorcery staff allows her to unleash two distinct spells: Glintshard Shot for single targets and Glintshard Shower for larger groups of adversaries, which may even push them back. Though her arsenal is modest, the fully enhanced versions of these spells prove effective against tougher foes, noticeably depleting their health bars.
All Magic Cocktail combos
In most instances, the number of stacks doesn’t matter unless explicitly stated; however, the floating fireball spell functions equally well regardless of whether you have a combination of two fires and one standard, or two standards and one fire.
Remember this important detail: Just as with other spells, the Recluse combos require a moment to be cast. Ensure that you have a secure location for casting them, avoiding any situation where a boss is breathing down your neck.
- Three standard: Creates a swirl of magic that damages enemies at intervals
- Three fire: Launches a spiralling bolt of fire at a target that explodes on impact. Has short range
- Three lightning: Lightning quickstep, similar to the Quickstep Ash of War in Elden Ring
- One standard, one fire, one lightning: Builds energy for a few seconds and damages nearby foes, then explodes and deals heavy damage. Has a short range of effect
- Standard and fire: Creates a floating ball of fire that hovers around a single target and deals fire damage before exploding and causing heavier fire damage
- Standard and lightning: Charges for a second, then unleashes an arc of lightning-infused magic that speeds toward a target
- Fire and lightning: Rushes forward as a bolt of lightning and crashes down at a target, creating a small explosion of fire
- One holy, one lightning, one standard: Encases self in an ice crystal and causes an ice storm in a broad area for several seconds. Generates ice explosion when the storm ends
- One holy, one lightning, one fire: Calls down brilliant white lightning that electrifies the ground and explodes after several seconds. The explosion leaves burning ground behind
- One standard, one holy, one fire: Breathe holy fire in a wide arc on front of you
- Holy and fire: Creates a field that increases max HP for all inside it
- Holy and lightning: Creates a shield that deflects attacks without consuming stamina or requiring an equipment slot
- Holy and standard: Creates a field that lets you use skills, sorcery, and Incantations without spending FP
Best weapons, magic, and Incantations for Recluse
As a gamer, I’ve found that crafting a build for the Recluse character can be quite challenging compared to others due to limited options for acquiring guaranteed staffs, seals, and magical drops. Luckily, our guide provides detailed insights on where to find these magic and Incantation resources.
In an optimal situation, you’d come across lightning, fire, and sacred incantations, ensuring a diverse assortment of Magic Blends at your disposal. Among the simplest to utilize options are:
- Flame Sling
- Lightning Spear
- Discus of Light
All three spells have relatively quick charging times, and they can be boosted for additional damage. Zamoor’s Ice Storm is another potent sorcery, though it’s scarce, and you might find success with any of the dragon communion Incantations. However, their long casting times and difficulty in hitting swift targets make them challenging to use effectively. The ideal moment to employ a dragon breath Incantation is when a boss is stationary during a crucial hit or if they’re preoccupied elsewhere.
If the spells you need aren’t available, it’s wise to have one or two weapons with elemental properties ready. The Recluse isn’t designed for wielding greatswords and hammers, but a twinblade, dagger, whip, or sword with a beneficial affinity allows you to utilize more combinations of Magic Cocktail’s even without magic at your disposal.
Best relics for Recluse
Just as the unpredictability of locating weapons can make it tough to suggest a setup beneficial for everyone, so too does the haphazard nature of discovering relics present a challenge in recommending a combination. However, there are certain relics and boss remembrances particularly suited for Recluse characters.
Grand Tranquil Scene
- [Recluse] Suffer blood loss and increase attack power upon ultimate art activation
- Mind +2
- Intelligence +2
This move carries a certain level of risk as it causes a large reduction in your Health Points all at once. Use your ultimate skill cautiously, and aim to attack often and swiftly afterward to replenish your health. The Grand Tranquil Scene, unique to The Recluse, proves particularly effective when combined with other gems or abilities that boost you during blood loss events.
Vestige of Night
- [Recluse] Collecting affinity (absorbing stains with Magic Cocktail) creates Terra Magica where you’re standing
- Magic Attack Power +2
The remnants of the Night originate from the Quests of Rememberance related to the Hermit, and the magic potency of spells amplifies when the Hermit occupies the battlefield with Terra Magica.
For other gems, you want to focus on these stats:
- Mind (for more FP)
- Increased intelligence or faith
- Improved stamina or stamina recovery
If there’s any other gem that enhances intellect, mental acuity, or spirituality, it could still be beneficial, regardless of whether its other enhancements and statistics have minimal impact on the Recluse.
If you enjoy playing the mage character in Nightreign for an extended period, take a moment to explore the various Recluse skins available. These skins will allow you to frequently update your appearance.
