In Elden Ring, matching up for the Nightreign isn’t just a matter of pushing a button and letting the game handle it all. This is particularly relevant when you aim to confront the Night Lords specifically, or if you wish to team up with players from different regions.
Beyond learning how to play single and multiplayer modes, it’s worth noting that there are a few matchmaking guidelines in Elden Ring: Nightreign that aren’t extensively covered. If you’re just starting out with the game, the lack of clarity on these rules might cause some confusion or annoyance. Don’t worry, though! We’ll walk you through everything essential about matchmaking within Elden Ring: Nightreign to help you navigate the game more smoothly.
How Elden Ring Nightreign matchmaking works
Fundamentally, the matchmaking system in Elden Ring’s Nightregin is quite simple. By engaging with the Table of Lost Grace at Roundtable Hold, you access the Expeditions menu. This menu allows you to choose which boss you wish to confront, and upon selection, it initiates a search for two other players who are also seeking the same boss, thereby establishing a multiplayer encounter.
If you’ve activated the cross-region network feature, you could potentially play with users from various parts of the world. As I’m located in Argentina, my primary gaming partners have been mostly from the United States, but lag times were seldom a concern for us.
In Elden Ring Nightreign, the process of matchmaking can get challenging: The initial Night Lord you encounter is Tricephalos. To unlock other bosses, you must defeat Tricephalos at least once first. So, if you aim to play with others who have already defeated additional Night Lords, you’ll initially need to complete this prerequisite. However, you can potentially skip this step when matchmaking through specific platform party invites. Yet, it won’t apply to random matchmaking with players beyond your friends list.

The occurrences of Earth changes, which occur randomly and impact maps in various ways, become accessible following the defeat of our friend Tricephalos. These events rotate, and to unlock them all, there are several conditions to meet. It’s possible to team up with players who currently have a Shifting Earth event active, even if you don’t, but it’s necessary that you’ve experienced it at least once beforehand.
Additionally, there are Character Recollections, unique tidbits of lore for each playable class that trigger specific goals during your next expedition. If one is active, you won’t be able to join a game with other players who also have an active objective. However, you can avoid this by inviting friends through the party system in your platform. Keep in mind that only the person who initiates the matchmaking will have their objective displayed on the map.
To summarize, when teaming up with friends in Elden Ring Nightreign, you’ll encounter few obstacles and can easily join their games. However, finding matches with strangers may prove challenging. As you advance through the game, this task will gradually become simpler.
