In 2024, discussions about the challenging nature of Elden Ring resurfaced again, and its director Hidetaka Miyazaki from FromSoft expressed that they could potentially reduce the difficulty level, but emphasized it would negatively impact the game as a whole. Conversely, there appears to be no such worry when increasing the challenge, as Bandai Namco announced a new hard mode titled “Deep of Night” (Nightreign) for Elden Ring, set to release in September.
To start off, let me clarify that Elden Ring and Elden Ring: Nightreign are distinct games with unique experiences. While Elden Ring is primarily a solo soulslike game, Elden Ring: Nightreign focuses on co-op and extraction gameplay. The comparison isn’t perfect, but the idea of having a teammate to help you in difficult situations, whom I like to call your personal “Let Me Solo Her,” does make challenges less daunting.
In a humorous twist, I find the mentality of “We can’t go down, but we can sure as hell go up” amusing.
Deep of Night is specifically tailored for experienced players who have ventured through the Night numerous times, according to Bandai. The enemies will be more formidable than in other game modes, and unfortunately, players won’t have the option to choose specific Nightlords at the beginning of their journey-you’ll encounter whoever you get drawn into battle with, and may fortune favor you.
Bandai mentioned that the current landscape adjustments aren’t being accounted for, implying that modifications related to the Earth’s shifting will not be in play, and unique items specific to the Deep of Night setting will debut. These exclusive items encompass “Depths Relics” and weapons boasting multiple fresh, yet potentially disadvantageous, properties. Essentially, the Nightlord has both rewards and penalties up its sleeve.
Bandai announced that the challenging and exhilarating mode called “‘Deep of Night'” is available. They encourage players to attempt it and reach Depth 3. If successful, players can experience Depths 4 and 5 which offer an unending battle for those seeking even more excitement. The difficulty of Deep of Night will progress as you delve deeper, but will also vary depending on your wins and losses according to Bandai.
If these details sound familiar to you, it might be due to a Nightreign datamining session that happened earlier this month. This revelation included insights about the Deep of Night mode, such as its five distinct layers, each with a maximum rating of 999. This seems to resemble the rating system FromSoft previously used for Armor Core 6.
The specifics of how everything will unfold are yet to be witnessed, but players can expect the Deep of Night mode from Nightreign to become active starting September 11.
