Elden Ring Nightreign Fixes a Longstanding FromSoftware Issue

Over the past ten years, FromSoftware has consistently delivered exceptional games. Starting with Demon’s Souls, they established a unique formula. However, it was 2011’s Dark Souls that propelled them to unprecedented heights, sparking an entire genre due to its intricate and challenging gameplay mechanics. Since the release of Dark Souls, they have produced two sequels, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring, each one receiving more positive reviews than the last. Yet, their journey hasn’t been without bumps; there have been some missteps along the way.

In Elden Ring Nightreign, FromSoftware addresses one area where their action-RPG formula often falls short: ranged combat. Despite the game’s captivating gameplay, immaculate presentation, and exceptional world design that often surpasses others, this aspect was a weakness in previous titles. However, due to the overall high quality of the experience, many players tend to overlook these flaws. But with Elden Ring Nightreign, they are making significant strides to improve it.

FromSoftware’s History with Ranged Combat

In most FromSoftware games, particularly the Dark Souls series and its spin-offs, close-quarter fighting is what they excel at. The game mechanics make melee combat feel intuitive and satisfying, prompting players to engage in it frequently. Although characters can use magic wands or bows, these options don’t always yield significant rewards.

In many of FromSoftware’s previous games, ranged weapons tend to be quite simple, with only one attack type and dealing relatively low damage. These attacks also require a significant amount of time to prepare, making the player susceptible to enemy attacks. This issue is particularly noticeable in their early action-RPG titles, where players were unable to move and fire simultaneously.

Over time, FromSoftware steadily enhanced ranged fighting, expanding the arsenal of weapons and polishing the shooting mechanics. Yet, despite these updates, ranged combat in FromSoftware’s games was usually overshadowed by melee and magical combat. However, with Elden Ring Nightreign, this has been rectified.

How Elden Ring Nightreign Fixes FromSoftware’s Ranged Combat

Ironeye Packs a Significant Punch

The recently launched three-player cooperative roguelike game titled “Elden Ring Nightreign” introduces players to eight playable character classes known as ‘Nightfarers’. Among these, the Ironeye stands out and specializes exclusively in ranged combat. Interestingly enough, the Ironeye is one of the most effective Nightfarer characters within “Elden Ring Nightreign“.

From the beginning, Ironeye’s bow in Elden Ring delivers a substantial amount of damage, much greater than the starting bows in the base game. As the game progresses, this damage output becomes even more noteworthy as players discover various modifications and enhancements that can add new status effects and stat bonuses to their ranged weapon, making it even more powerful over time.

In Elden Ring: Nightreign, ammunition is boundless, eliminating the necessity for crafting materials. Consequently, players can fire away as many shots as they desire during combat. Notably, most bows in Nightreign offer at least three distinct attacks – a primary single-shot, a secondary multi-shot, and a Weapon Art ability such as a powerful shot or a barrage of magical arrows. The abundance of weapon options, infinite ammo, and enhanced damage output make the Ironeye bow an enjoyable play in Elden Ring: Nightreign.

Ironeye Is Vital for Team Composition

In addition to being highly enjoyable to play, “Elden Ring Nightreign” relies heavily on its character known as Ironeye within its gameplay strategy, or meta. Essentially, “Nightreign” is a cooperative game, and the arrangement of the team members significantly impacts the outcome. While expert players can usually make any composition successful, teams that excel often include an Ironeye member.

Ironeye excels at attracting an opponent’s attention while maintaining a safe distance, thereby providing a temporary advantage for the team to attack the enemy aggressively. Moreover, his long-range attack proves beneficial in reviving fallen comrades, as it can be performed without risk of harm from Elden Ring Nightreign’s massive boss attacks.
