Since its release in 2022, Elden Ring has become incredibly popular and is widely considered FromSoftware’s greatest achievement. The game was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, a celebrated figure at FromSoftware, and features worldbuilding contributions from George R.R. Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire. Elden Ring is now a modern classic, spawning a successful expansion, a unique spin-off game, and an upcoming live-action movie adaptation.
It’s debatable whether Elden Ring is the best game from FromSoftware, especially with acclaimed titles like Dark Souls and Bloodborne. However, its huge popularity is undeniable, and many fans are hoping for a sequel. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game’s creator, has said he’s still striving to make his ideal game – could Elden Ring 2 be that masterpiece?
As of now, FromSoftware hasn’t announced or even suggested a sequel to Elden Ring, but given their history, it’s possible they could create a series of games, like a trilogy or at least two games. While a sequel could be a completely new story like Bloodborne, the world of Elden Ring has so much history and detail that there’s definitely room to continue the existing narrative, much like the Dark Souls series. The Lands Between are full of lore in every place, person, and item, leaving plenty of potential stories yet untold.
A recent discussion on the Elden Ring subreddit, r/eldenringdiscussion, focused on what a potential Elden Ring II could be about. One user asked what setting players would like to see, suggesting a time before the Shattering to explore the Lands Between in its prime. They also proposed a prehistoric era, imagining what Farum Azula looked like before the meteor impact.
It’s no surprise everyone has different ideas about where a sequel to Elden Ring could take place, and with nearly 100 comments on the topic, the possibilities seem endless. The most popular suggestion was a location called the Badlands, where Godfrey and the Tarnished ended up after he wasn’t chosen as Elden Lord. Others agreed that a completely new setting, separate from the Lands Between, would be exciting. This would give the developers freedom with the story and allow them to hint at events from the first Elden Ring as distant legends – much like how players piece together the truth. Suggestions included the Land of Reeds and the original homeland of the Numen.
One player expressed hope for a sequel set far in the future, rather than in the past before the Shattering. They shared, “I seem to be in the minority, but I’d love to see a story set long after the current events. An age where the influence of the Greater Will has faded, other powerful forces have risen, and old religions are resurfacing in a Lands Between that’s almost unrecognizable due to the passage of time.”
I’m glad I wouldn’t be responsible for creating the story for a potential Elden Ring 2. Honestly, all the ideas I’ve heard sound fantastic, and I think most fans would be happy with anything FromSoftware delivers in a sequel. For now, we can only hope they give us what we’re hoping for in the future.
