Dystopian drama with “gut-wrenching twists” said to be ‘unlike anything on TV’ is coming to Netflix

Next month, Netflix will add the popular series The Man in the High Castle, starring Rufus Sewell. Based on a novel by Philip K. Dick, the show presents a chilling alternate history where the Nazis won World War II. Originally released in 2015, it explores what the world might look like after such a victory.

Frank Spotnitz, the creator of shows like The X-Files, Medici, and Leonardo, developed The Man in the High Castle. The series begins with the assassination of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933, an event that sets off a series of events ultimately leading to an Axis victory in World War II.

The series, executive produced by Frank Spotnitz and Ridley Scott, will begin streaming on Netflix on March 11th. This is almost seven years after the show originally concluded on Prime Video.

The show features Sewell as John Smith, an American who has joined the Nazi regime and is tasked with uncovering the resistance movement in New York.

Alexa Davalos plays Juliana Crain, a woman living in a Japanese-occupied San Francisco. She discovers a growing resistance movement through its leader, played by Stephen Root, and ultimately decides to join the fight.

The show also stars Rupert Evans as Frank Frink, Juliana’s boyfriend, along with Bella Heathcote as Nicole Dörmer, a filmmaker from Berlin, DJ Qualls as Ed McCarthy, and Joel de la Fuente as Colonel Takeshi Kido.

I’m really excited to see Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa playing Nobusuke Tagomi, and Chelah Horsdal as John’s wife, Helen. Plus, Jason O’Mara is going to be Wyatt Price, and Rick Worthy is taking on the role of Lem Washington. The cast is looking pretty solid!

Critics generally like The Man in the High Castle, giving it an average rating of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. The first season was particularly well-received, earning a ‘Certified’ badge with a 95% approval rating.

Critics have praised the series as both intellectually stimulating and remarkably original, setting it apart from other shows on television (according to the Memphis Flyer). SFX Magazine highlighted the exceptional performances and complex characters, along with its surprising plot twists and intensely emotional, often bleak, portrayal of the human condition.

Honestly, the show started strong, but the reviews took a bit of a hit during the middle seasons – especially season 2, which only got a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes. Thankfully, they really stuck the landing with season 4! It ended up with a fantastic 92% score, which was awesome to see.

The Man on the High Castle will be available to stream on Netflix from 11 March.
