Dutton Ranch Finally Reveals John Dutton’s Yellowstone Replacement

Episode 4 of the new Yellowstone series on Paramount+ shows how the Dutton family plans to move forward without John Dutton. Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) demonstrates a key trait of her father while also being dishonest with Carter (Finn Little). Although the original Yellowstone series with Kevin Costner concluded in 2024 after five seasons, the story will continue in two follow-up shows.

The story of Yellowstone continues at the Dutton Ranch, following Beth, Rip (Cole Hauser), and their son, Carter. A new spin-off, Marshals, starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, recently premiered on CBS. However, the original Dutton Ranch storyline has resonated more with longtime fans, largely because it stays true to the spirit of the original series and focuses on in-depth character development.

Beth Lies To Carter In Dutton Ranch Episode 4

In the fourth episode of Dutton Ranch, Beth mirrors her father’s behavior from the original Yellowstone series by deceiving Carter. After their black Angus cattle contract foot-and-mouth disease, Beth and Rip are forced to euthanize the entire herd. Beth, wanting to protect Carter from the harsh reality, chooses not to tell him about their difficult decision.

When Beth discovers her 19-year-old son, Carter, with Beulah Jackson’s granddaughter, she immediately asks him to leave. She then tells him to take Oreana Jackson out to dinner, but this isn’t a genuine request – it’s a way to keep the two young people separated so she can protect Carter.

When Beth’s son returns home after ditching school and spending the day with Dwight White – including having some beer – Carter realizes Beth hasn’t been telling him everything. He’s frustrated to learn that Rip, and Zachariah had already dealt with the herd and that Beth kept it a secret from him.

Carter dreams of becoming a rancher like his father, so he’s upset about having to return to high school with much younger students instead of gaining practical experience on a ranch. When he discovers Beth has been hiding important information from him, he finally reaches his breaking point and confronts her, accusing her of lying.

Beth’s Is Just Like John In Dutton Ranch Episode 4

Instead of telling Carter about the foot-and-mouth disease affecting the herd and letting him decide how to handle it, Beth protected him from the information. This action mirrored something she frequently disapproved of in her father, John – his habit of keeping his children unaware of problems and dangers on the ranch in an effort to shield them.

Beth was completely unaware of what happened at the ranch. Although she should have understood Carter’s need to know better than anyone, she instead relied on the parenting style of John Dutton, prioritizing protecting him over trusting him with the truth.

It’s becoming clear that Carter’s desires for his own life are clashing with Beth and Rip’s expectations for him. At 19, Carter’s old enough to make his own choices, but Beth and Rip still want to guide him as he becomes an adult, and Dutton is trying to find the right balance between letting him grow and offering support.

Even so, Carter doesn’t need to be aware of everything happening at the Dutton Ranch. As events escalate in Rio Paloma, Beth and Rip are starting to fully embrace their family’s ruthless side. In the fourth episode, they track down JR Simon, the man who falsified the documents regarding the infected bull, and destroy his trailer.
