Dune: Prophecy star Aoife Hinds talks to us about playing a Bene Gesserit trainee

As a cinephile who has seen the evolution of sci-fi television over the past few decades, I must admit that “Dune: Prophecy” is truly captivating. The latest episode, “Twice Born,” has left me on edge, especially with Aoife Hinds’ character Emeline seemingly embracing an extreme form of religious zealotry.

In the TV series “Dune: Prophecy” on HBO, Aoife Hinds (daughter of actor Ciarán Hinds) portrays Emeline, a character preparing to become a Bene Gesserit sister. Since the show’s debut, Emeline has witnessed her elder sister being consumed by flames from within, lost a friend amidst the spice torture, and been haunted by an inexplicable nightmare within her own consciousness. Along with many other trainee Bene Gesserit sisters, she is understandably rattled.

Emeline is finding solace in her faith, particularly a religious belief system that rejects technology, which has been around since humanity narrowly prevailed against advanced machines in a fierce conflict over a century before the story began. In the latest episode titled “Twice Born,” she appears to be growing increasingly fervent in her convictions.

On the horizon, there are alternative perspectives emerging. Unaware to Emeline, her friend Lila has been reawakened…assisted by advanced artificial intelligence technology. In an exclusive interview, we spoke with Aoife Hinds about everything that transpired. You can read the interview below!

It appears Emeline is increasingly embracing the anti-technology faith. She’s had a leaning towards it since the beginning, but now she’s gaining followers and expressing her convictions more publicly. Can you help me understand what she might be experiencing as this movement grows?

Aoife Hinds: “Indeed, these characters have experienced two incredibly challenging ordeals and witnessed traumatic events that have left deep scars. They’ve watched Kasha consume from within, endured Lila’s suffering without relief, bid farewell to her, observed the Mother Superior depart, and seen Tula, their leader at the school, struggling; she appears uncertain. To add to this, they all shared a terrifying dream. Consequently, there’s a growing concern among them about their safety within the Sisterhood. Unquestionably, following the nightmare, they are searching for explanations and struggling to comprehend what is happening to them. Everything feels intensified.

She seizes this moment since there’s an inner voice within her that has consistently doubted, and refuses to accept the narratives surrounding Dorotea. At this instant, she essentially conveys her belief that there’s more to the tale, that it’s unlikely Dorothea took her own life due to sorrow. She senses a deeper story because of her religious beliefs, as she knows how spiritual and devout Dorotea was. It doesn’t align with her understanding for Dorotea to have committed suicide, neither in the name of any sacrifice nor for a higher purpose.

Her intention is clear: to uncover hidden truths, as she grows increasingly convinced that something mysterious is at play. Given the fearful state of the acolytes and their confusion about what’s happening to them, she decides to contribute with what she possesses – her beliefs and values. She shares the teachings of Dorotea from the Orange Catholic Bible, recognizing that in times of distress, people often seek solace in faith. This act seems to open a path for her to expand her audience and influence.

As a film enthusiast, I find this situation quite intriguing. I believe there will be a clash of emotions within her character due to her deeply ingrained belief that thinking machines are inherently evil. Given her upbringing and strong stance against artificial intelligence, she hasn’t yet encountered the capabilities of these machines. So, it will be fascinating to observe how she navigates this new experience, possibly grappling with two contrasting viewpoints simultaneously.

Hinds: “We actually went and had drawing lessons the week before, which was really cool. This is what is great about being an actor: sometimes you go and you’re able to just learn something because you’re taught it for a role. And so we all had — me and the SAs, the wonderful SAs who were also part of that scene — these drawing lessons. And then after that we had a day where we rehearsed the scene with our director Richard [J. Lewis].

We ventured deep into some disturbing realms, and I must say, everyone involved, including the SAs, were truly remarkable. A few of them were even skilled artists, creating the stunning drawings. However, there was a definite disquiet as they entered this classroom, received spices for meditation, only to be led back into a terrifying memory they had suppressed. The experience was extremely intense.

Hey, I’ve got a more casual query for you. We chatted with Chloe Lea and Jade Anouka not long ago, and they mentioned that the shoes provided by your team are quite uncomfortable. Could you clarify if this is indeed the case?

Hinds: “I can verify…these aren’t your typical socks, I can only liken them to swimming socks. You wear these thin, plastic covers when you enter a pool or similar places. However, they were extremely thin and somewhat uncomfortable, but because of the dresses we were wearing, they weren’t visible.

“It seems like many unexpected events can occur, leaving us taken aback. The conclusion of episode five is simply astonishing.
