Dune 3’s Surprising Runtime Sets New Record for Sci-Fi Trilogy

The running time for the upcoming film, Dune: Part Three, has been revealed, making it the longest movie in the Dune series so far. This final chapter in the trilogy, which began in 2021, will be released later this year. It’s based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah, the second book in the Dune saga. The film is directed by Denis Villeneuve, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Brian K. Vaughan and co-produced with Cale Boyter, Mary Parent, Brian Herbert, Thomas Tull, and Tanya Lapointe.

Dune 3 runtime breaks shocking franchise record

The official IMAX website lists the runtime for Dune: Part Three as two hours and twenty minutes.

This film is the shortest of the three movies directed by Denis Villeneuve. The first film runs for two hours and 35 minutes, while the second, Part Two, is the longest at two hours and 46 minutes.

However, the film’s length is a bit more than David Lynch’s 1984 Dune movie, which runs for two hours and seventeen minutes.

The listed runtime might not be final, as the movie is still eight months from release. We’ll know the official length closer to the premiere date.

The next Dune movie, Part Three, will be set 17 years after the events of the previous film. It will focus on Paul Atreides as he rules as Emperor and faces the challenges that come with such power, including attempts to overthrow him – one of those threats coming from a character named Scytale.

During a question-and-answer session after the trailer reveal, Villeneuve stated the third film in the series will feel quite different, with a changed mood, flow, and speed. He added that it will be significantly more action-filled and suspenseful than the previous installments.

Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, leading a cast that also includes Zendaya as Chani, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho/Hayt, Florence Pugh as Irulan, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Mohiam, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, and Javier Bardem as Stilgar. These actors all reprise their roles from previous films.

The cast now features Robert Pattinson as Scytale, Isaach de Bankolé as Farok, Jason Momoa’s son Nakoa-Wolf as Leto II Atreides, and Ida Brooke as Ghanima Atreides.

The third Dune movie is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, and will compete with Marvel’s new Avengers film in theaters.
