Dominic West, known for his role in Downton Abbey, is starring in a new movie called The Man Who Stole Portugal. The film, which just began filming, is a historical heist story based on a massive real-life fraud case.
The movie takes place in the 1920s and tells the story of Alves Reis, an ordinary man with a knack for getting by, who is determined to improve the lives of his wife, Maria, and their children.
He steadily climbed the ranks, then pulled off his most audacious scheme yet: defrauding the Bank of Portugal to amass a huge personal fortune. Sadly, his actions ended up causing severe financial hardship for the entire nation.

James Nelson Joyce, known for his roles in This City is Ours and A Thousand Blows, stars as Alves Reis. Emily Fair, from House of Guinness, plays Maria.
The film features Joel Fry, known for his role in Our Flag Means Death, Richard E. Grant from Saltburn, Nia Towle of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Herbert Nordrum who appeared in The Worst Person in the World, and Kim Bodnia, famous for Killing Eve.
What to Read Next
Dominic West, known for his roles in the second and third Downton Abbey films, will be playing a character named Carlos.
Director Thomas Napper finds the character of Alves Reis compelling because Reis isn’t trying to tear down the existing system; he’s trying to find a place within it. He simply wants a stable, secure future for his family, and that resonates strongly with many people today who feel like the system is rigged against them.
The story is captivating because we see someone who doesn’t belong navigate a closed-off world, succeeding through cleverness and risk-taking. It’s both entertaining and relevant, highlighting issues of access, exclusion, and the lengths people will go to in order to gain entry.

According to executive producer Terry Smith, The Man Who Stole Portugal tells the story of a brilliant criminal who discovered it was simpler to counterfeit the contract for printing money than to forge the banknotes themselves.
Looking back, the game really predicted things. The way the in-game economy crashed Portugal and caused a political mess? It feels a lot like what happened with central banks printing money during the 2008-2009 financial crisis and then again with COVID. It’s kind of eerie how accurate it was, honestly.
Currently, filming is underway for “The Man Who Stole Portugal,” with locations in the UK, South Africa, and Portugal. And, you can now watch “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” on Sky or NOW Cinema.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a beautifully illustrated 100-page tribute to Sir David Attenborough, is now available! You can find it at newsstands or purchase it online.
