Dota 2 needs a new patch: the community complains in unison

It seems like it’s been quite some time since there was a new update on Dota 2, and as a result, the players are growing increasingly impatient, eagerly awaiting the release of the next gameplay modification.

Even though Dota 2 is currently doing well, the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre can easily grow repetitive. To keep games within this genre engaging and balanced, frequent updates to gameplay mechanics, maps, items, and characters are essential. Recent events like Crownfall and Frostivus in Dota 2 have been enjoyable, but players are eagerly anticipating further changes to maintain their interest.

“It has been 84 years”: The Dota 2 balance patch drought enters its third month

Players in Dota 2 are finding it hard to pinpoint an exact figure, but the general sentiment is that they’re feeling this way since the release of patch 7.37e, which was just two months ago. In contrast, the original 7.37 patch was rolled out on July 31, 2024. With the new tournament season in full swing, it appears as though players are growing increasingly uneasy about the current condition of the game.

There’s been plenty of praise for Crownfall and Frostivus, yet it’s clear that the game could use an update in its mechanics with a 7.38 patch. It’s been more than two months since even a lettered patch was released, and while 7.37e made some adjustments, the current meta feels quite stale.

Many other players have echoed this sentiment, which begs the question of when will Valve answer.

Earlier, there were stretches without any updates, but since Crownfall continues till early February, many gamers anticipate that the next update might not arrive until March or even as late as April.

If it’s accurate, we’d be looking at a long nine-month wait for the next ‘number’ update or a four-month delay following the most recent ‘letter’ update. Given the length of this gap between significant updates, it’s understandable that players might feel somewhat frustrated. After all, this is one of the longest stretches without a major patch in recent memory.

Players find themselves growing weary as Lina and Shadowfiend seem to rule the field, while they eagerly anticipate the emergence of Ringmaster and Kez, who are yet to make their appearance.

Tinkering with Tinker

Based on discussions on the Dota 2 subreddit, it’s speculated that Tinker might receive a new feature in patch 7.38 – possibly a return of his Heat Seeking Rockets. When facets and innate abilities were introduced to the game back in May 2024, the landscape of Dota 2 was significantly altered. With the removal of his Heat Seeking Rockets in patch 7.36 and the reintroduction of his March of the Machines ability, Tinker has undergone numerous adjustments and nerfs since then, aimed at curbing its dominance.

Tinker is getting Heat-Seeking Missiles reintroduced as Facet next patch.

While this hypothesis remains unverified, it’s essential to approach it cautiously. If it turns out to be accurate, though, then we might anticipate a significant update coming up in the game’s development.

Since Valve doesn’t often share patch release dates in advance, fans are left guessing about when the updates might come out. We can only cross our fingers for an interim update to arrive quickly, or for an announcement of version 7.38 within the next few weeks, complete with a scheduled date.

Currently, despite some players expressing worries, it’s worth noting that Dota 2 has been thriving in terms of player count. In fact, it reached a staggering number close to 720,000 players at its peak during the last month.

Since Fissure Playground tournament is underway and more Dota 2 tournaments are scheduled over the following months, it would be great to have a new patch to shake up the current game strategy (meta).
