When Ridley Scott directs a crime drama, you know it’s going to be compelling, and his pilot for Dope Thief delivers on that expectation immediately. The opening scene shows two men, seemingly DEA agents, expertly raiding a Philadelphia drug house. However, the show quickly reveals a surprising twist: they aren’t federal agents at all, but thieves who’ve made a dangerous mistake by stealing from the wrong people.
Even just the first few minutes of Dope Thief establish it as one of Apple TV’s top crime dramas of 2025. The eight-episode series is fast-paced and perfect for a weekend binge. It was directed by Scott, who also executive produced, and created by Peter Craig (known for The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick). Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura star in leading roles.
What Makes ‘Dope Thief’ Worth Eight Episodes of Your Weekend
I recently saw this fantastic film starring Henry as Ray Driscoll and Moura as Manny Carvalho. They play two old friends from Philadelphia who have this crazy scheme: they pretend to be DEA agents and rob small-time drug dealers. Things get really complicated when they stumble onto a much bigger drug operation and suddenly both the real DEA and a dangerous criminal organization are after them! It’s a wild ride.
The strength of Dope Thief lies in the compelling connection between Henry and Moura. They portray men with a shared, complicated history – a love-hate relationship built on surviving difficult times together. Henry handles a challenging role effortlessly, and Moura, fresh off his work in Civil War and Narcos, is his equal in the first few episodes. However, the series divides their screen time in the latter half, and most reviewers feel this is where the show begins to lose steam.
I’m really enjoying Dope Thief! It’s getting great scores – 87% from critics and 83% from viewers like me on Rotten Tomatoes. People are saying the first episode is fantastic, though the middle gets a little slow, but the finale really delivers. The leads, Henry and Moura, have amazing chemistry – critics even compared them to Bernal and Luna in La Máquina, which says a lot because that show totally relied on its two stars. Plus, the supporting cast – Kate Mulgrew, Marin Ireland, and Ving Rhames – are all fantastic and keep things engaging, even when the main plot wanders a bit.
Ridley Scott’s Latest Addition To His Crime Thriller Catalog

Scott clearly knows his way around crime thrillers, and the pilot for Dope Thief demonstrates that skill. The episode strongly recalls American Gangster, a 2007 Denzel Washington film often considered a hidden gem. Scott brought his signature, powerful visual style—usually reserved for movies—to the pilot, making it feel more like the beginning of a film than a typical TV show premiere. The series doesn’t quite maintain that same level of energy with different directors, highlighting just how high Scott’s standards are.
He’s bringing a similar style to his new film, The Dog Stars, a post-apocalyptic thriller with Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce. The movie, based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel and written by Mark L. Smith (known for The Revenant and Twisters), will be released in theaters on August 28, 2026, by 20th Century Studios. It tells the story of a pilot surviving on an empty airbase in Colorado after a devastating pandemic nearly wipes out the human race. Director Scott filmed the movie quickly—in just 34 days—and believes it’s his best work yet, a claim supported by the talented cast.
Until August, Dope Thief is on Apple TV+, and you can stream all eight episodes in just one weekend.
