Doctor Who’s Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper reunite for “mysterious” new adventure

A new Doctor Who audio drama will reunite Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper, who will once again play the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler. The drama, titled Doctor Who – The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Pandemonium, revisits a past episode to provide Rose with a sense of resolution.

Okay, so the adventure starts at this huge estate, the Powell Estate, back in 2006. Me and Rose show up and things are totally chaotic! Apparently, famous people from history are running around causing trouble. I’m talking a really wasted Samuel Pepys, some rowdy Celtic warriors, and get this – my mother-in-law’s new roommate is none other than Edith Nesbit! It was a seriously weird scene.

While the Doctor investigates the strange events, Rose hopes the disruption in time might allow her to see her father again.

“The emotional stakes are very high in this episode!” commented Eccleston.

Okay, so this episode really hits hard on the ‘Father’s Day’ stuff, and it makes Rose think a lot about messing with time again. That’s a big source of conflict between her and the Doctor, and it comes up a lot here.

Sophie Piper, known for her recent appearance in the Doctor Who season 15 finale ‘The Reality War’, described the audio drama as a compelling blend of historical information and classic dramatic elements, exploring themes of loss and grief.

She explained that the story explores feelings of sadness about past events and the difficulty of accepting them. For Rose, it’s particularly painful because it marks the end of her relationship with her father’s story.

I’m really excited about the new Ninth Doctor adventure, Pandemonium! It’s written by Katharine Armitage, and the cast is fantastic. Clive Hayward plays Glen, Kate Harbour takes on multiple roles – Edith Nesbit, Violette Szabo, and even a Celtic Warrior! – and Nick Denning-Read plays both Paul and Samuel Pepys. It sounds like a really interesting mix of characters and time periods!

Camille Coduri, returning as Jackie Tyler, described how Kat has deeply respected Russell T Davies’ writing. She said Kat’s performance felt incredibly emotional and impactful, like it ‘pulled out your heart’ at times.

She explained that the appeal of Doctor Who lies in its unique blend of oddity, fright, humor, and memorable historical figures, adding how wonderful it was to contribute to the show.

According to producer and script editor Matt Fitton, after a brief journey to the future in ‘Cloud Eight’, the Doctor and Rose find themselves back at the Powell Estate. Something strange has happened – the estate is in chaos, overrun with people from different periods in history.

Katharine Armitage excels at building immersive and detailed story worlds, populating them with compelling characters, and developing unique, imaginative premises. She finds inspiration in the everyday locations around London, recognizing the rich history embedded in the places where people live.

Armitage explained that her story explores how we often think of history as something grand and distant, confined to books and old libraries. But she loves how London’s blue plaques reveal that incredible people once lived ordinary lives in seemingly unremarkable places all around the city – they’re hidden in plain sight.
