The highly anticipated return of a popular comedy show sequel has gotten off to a fantastic start, with critics calling it exciting, uplifting, and joyful.
Disney+ is launching a special episode of The Muppet Show featuring Sabrina Carpenter as the guest host. This episode is also being used as a test to see if the show can be brought back as a full series, much like the original that aired from 1976 to 1981. In a preview, Kermit jokes that it’s a return to the show’s original stage, and potentially a new beginning depending on how well this special performs.
The revival of The Muppet Show, set to premiere in 2026, is off to a fantastic start, currently holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on six reviews. Cher Thompson of ScreenRant describes the new show as funny and heartwarming, successfully blending nostalgia with a fresh take on the classic variety format. She also notes that it’s an ambitious project with potential for further development, and hopes ABC will give it the opportunity to evolve.
The latest episode of The Muppet Show stars Kristen Schaal alongside comedy favorites Seth Rogen and Maya Rudolph. Both Schaal and Rogen served as executive producers, and the episode was directed by Alex Timbers. Jim Henson is still recognized as one of the show’s original creators. Like the classic Muppet Show, the new episode has earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
As a huge movie and TV fan, I grew up with The Muppet Show, and it’s amazing to think Jim Henson and Jack Burns created it together! It was a massive hit, racking up four Primetime Emmys. Henson himself was the voice of Kermit, which always felt special, and Frank Oz brought so much life to characters like Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear. Honestly, The Muppets just became these unforgettable cultural icons, and it’s no surprise everyone in Hollywood keeps trying to revive them. They’re truly timeless!
The Muppets have appeared in several recent projects, including two theatrical films: The Muppets (2011), starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams, and Muppets Most Wanted (2014) with Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, and Tina Fey. A mockumentary series, The Muppets, aired on ABC from 2015 to 2016, but didn’t gain much popularity. More recently, Disney released the miniseries Muppets Now in 2020 and The Muppets Mayhem in 2023.
As a huge Muppet fan, I think the smartest move for bringing them back would be to recreate the feel of the original Muppet Show, but update it for today’s audiences with some really popular guest stars. Once we see this new version, everyone will be immediately wondering if it’s just a one-off special, or the start of a full-blown Muppet revival – and honestly, I’m hoping for the latter!
2026’s The Muppet Show (special event) premieres on Disney+ and ABC on February 4, 2026.
